Because he would never want to come here, even if he supports us as it were. Spurs are (sadly) a better club than us as it his, offering more than we are, why would he take a step backwards as opposed to joining the likes of Man Utd or Real Madrid? http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00375/Berbatov_375683a.jpg See bold. He might have a soft spot for us but I don't think it would be enough of an issue to make him prefer us over the likes of Real and Man Utd. That's all. Or even Tottenham as things are at the minute. People can bring up boyhood support as much as they like, but if he only had the choice between going to NUFC or going nowhere this summer, I'd bet he'd stay at Spurs purely due to European football and better prospects there at this moment in time.

Yes, it would be completely ridiculous. Berbatov will leave Spurs because he wants CL football next season. Even if we had a bid accepted, why (other than the "I was a Toon fan as a boy" factor, which will be meaningless compared to getting trophies/CL football in the immediate future) would he leave Spurs for us? He's leaving them for football reasons so as things stand there is not a hope in hell he will join us at the moment. Get the "you've got to buy a ticket to win the lottery" idea, but if we're going down that road why not just bid for Messi and Kaka while we're at it. Same chance of them wanting to play for the Toon at the moment as the chance of Berbatov wanting to come to us.

He's a right-back, so I can't see Spurs buying him, even if they move Chimbonda on. They bought Hutton for £9m in January and he's looked fairly canny for them, so I can't see them buying another right-back, especially for big bucks. Not to say we'll get him, but don't think Spurs are in for him.

Gattuso is good enough for us but I doub't he'd come. He said he wants to end his career in Glasgow. Plus you can Guarantee if we went for him Spurs and Everton would meaning we'd lose him as he'd want to play in Europe. Bullard is good enough to do a good job in our team. He's certainly better than Geremi. We'd all Like to buy the cream of europe. Until we realise we can't sign the likes of Modric and stop buying overpaid hasbeens instead to keep the fans happy we'll never achieve anything. Excellent post.

In contrast to the new Pepsi Max advert with Fabregas, Lampard, Ronaldinho et al, which is possibly the most eye-gougingly bad 30 seconds of television ever made.

Worst 10 signings of the season (According to Goal.com)

When Berbatov leaves Spurs this summer, Darren Bent could well be a very useful player for them, he's better than Martins IMO. -
My brother saw Ian Dowie in a bar this weekend, absolutely surrounded by a load of young blonde stunners. They must've all been interested in those rugged good looks rather than the fact that he's an ex-pro footballer and manager, and hence rolling in cash...

How important is Europe from a players viewpoint?
geordieglory replied to Minhosa's topic in Football
Is the correct answer. -
They've agreed terms, see the article on their official site again: "The Club is delighted to announce that it has reached agreement with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of Croatian midfielder, Luka Modric. Personal terms have been agreed with the player and he will now undertake a medical and apply for a work permit."

If Spurs turn up, they will win - they are a better side player for player. But with them having nothing to play for, the result could go any way: it all depends if Spurs fancy it or not. -
A little from column A, a little from column B.

Because he is broke at the mo. He is s**** & it is not worth renewing his contract. Any deal he does sign he will be costing the club over £1 million pounds a years. Every 1st team players contract is a major deal due to the numbers involved. £1 million per year = £20,000 per week. Can't believe that Ramage would be getting that, even with a new contract - surely closer to the £10k p/w mark at tops? Or am I just being deluded as to how much money NUFC can throw at s***? It is not just NUFC it is the whole Premier League. A player earning a £1 million basic is no longer though of as big earner in football. Fair point, but it still seems excessive for a player who is on the fringes of the first team, and also one who came up through the ranks - it's probably fairly true to say that promoted former youth players earn less than their counterparts that have been signed from elsewhere, at least until they become a regular first-teamer, a la Taylor etc. Not saying that I can't believe NUFC would be prepared to pay Ramage £20k p/w, but if they would then they're getting robbed, even at the value of today's inflated market of player wages.

The situation as you describe is exactly how the European places work this season, and how they worked last season (06/07). Not sure about before that, but if 2008/09 is how you've described, then there is no change. From at least 2006/07 onwards, only 5th has been guaranteed UEFA in the league - can go to 6th if both FA Cup finalists are in Europe, and to 7th if the Carling Cup winners are in Europe as well. Typical Sky - reporting news that is not news at all. Either that or you've got it wrong.
