  1. I think great players would have adapted to the conditions of a different era, whether it's current players playing with the crap balls on crap pitches or previous players playing under the current intense scrutiny and more tactical awareness.

On the subject of CR7 he's the second best for me, not in terms of ability or pleasing on the eye but his numbers and achievements mean he has to be up there

I think R9 and Zizou etc are better players than him but they aren't greater than him

Messi is the best though, he has numbers that surpass Ronaldo, achievements that march if not surpass Ronaldo and then just watching him it's clear he's better

  2. I might be way off the mark but are either of you locals?

Btw I'm not suggesting that makes you any less of a fan, we are all equal in that regards. Just when it comes to Sunderland and the dislike that probably is a factor.

We are far more likely to have friends/colleagues who are Mackems so regardless of how irrelevant they are from a footballing perspective to us they will always have a relevance due to that connection.

Confirmed a friendly against a Saudi club during the World Cup.

    Thought this was a windup

Didn't think that Sunderland would play a Saudi team, their owners surely are aware of how serious MLF's take hewman rights

I just rewatched the last 20 mins of the game and it’s even less bad than you think heat of moment. We started tackling harder, crowd was feeding into it and then we basically disrupted any momentum they had towards the end. Free kick? Let’s shove a bit and slow them them down. Let’s get into their attacking players heads to rattle them up and make them lose focus. It’s brilliant stuff.

Agreed, it wasn't even that bad, it's been massively exaggerated

I've seen all clubs in this league do far worse, especially in Europe and they get praised for excellent game management

As is the case, anything to do with us is made out to be bigger than it is. Take our spend, referenced constantly but rarely hear about Chelsea or Man-U

Oh great, the next Frederico Machado,Adnan Januzaj, Mason Greenwood, Danny Welbeck, Ravel Morrison, Will Keane, Jesse Lingaard  over hyped kid has emerged from Man U's amazing academy.

  6. It was 100% Joelinton

Lovely header from Trippier to Joelinton, who then played the ball over the top, the entire move was really good

As for Joelinton, he's just bloody brilliant. It's almost a year since he started playing the new role and he's just went from strength to strength.

That's a shit ton of cash. There is NO downside to going to the CL. Fuck, purposely bow out of the league cup if need be.

Exactly and as a "CL Club" we can easily justify higher sponsorship

  8. Was brilliant today and has actually been good for a while. It's nice that he's scored again, it's more than deserved.

Back when he went on his scoring run, whilst the goals were obviously invaluable he was mostly anonymous in those games.

That isn't the case now, he's very much involved and is doing a lot of good work. Long may it continue.

  9. I was also amongst those that thought he wasn't good enough to be starting games for us, especially for where we wanted to be (competing for European places) but happy to admit I was wrong. Last season he was poor so thought Howe had done all he could with him.

I still feel he's a fraction too slow at times when it comes to passing, the pass to Trippier when he was offside for example (wasn't actually offside but pass should have been made earlier) and the one where he gave a free kick away by handling it.

However he's bloody everywhere and doesn't stop running, which is so crucial to how we play.

I also find it interesting how he's changed, that small stint under Rafa he would sit deep and pass the ball about quite tidily whereas now he's a lot more all action though the passing has dropped off a touch. Overall he's playing better now than he did under Rafa imo.

  10. In general for far too long we have been a soft touch, even under Rafa I felt we were too nice and in a utopian world that's the way to be

But that's not how football at the top level operates, you need that element of standing up for yourself and not just rolling over and having your bellies tickled.

The one thing I've always liked about Joelinton is that he never took shit off anyone, sometimes it's resulted in silly cards but you know he can't be taken lightly.

I do think it's exaggerated in relation to today, especially time wasting. For the majority of the game we were on the front foot, creating chances and trying to score. Chelsea were happy to sit back and not commit too many players forward, which is what they are entitled to do so. I remember Mendy taking his time with a goal kick or two but there was no mention of time wasting then.

I think we definitely partook in some shithousing at the end but that's because it would have been a combination of the ref being shite as well as the 7 mins of time being added on.

Rather have points on the board than games in hand to be honest

    I worded it badly tbf

I'm happy with where we are especially as we stay 3rd even if all the teams below us win

Probably more of an ocd thing, prefer it when everyone plays the same amount of games
