I think this is a part of it but also the PL top teams are having a down season bar Arsenal. Arsenal still look really strong in Europe as they do domestically but Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, us haven't really looked good all season. We had 4 points from 4 games before the CL started, it's not like we were really good before the CL started. We played a lot better in the home leg this time than we did in the group stage against Barca also. I think the main reason is that the PL teams are actually just playing better teams now rather than waltzing through the group stage.

It's obviously not great to concede 7 but it's much better matching them for 3 quarters of a tie than meekly defending knowing you're going to lose and "only" losing 3-0 or something on aggregate.
