    On this day...

I was about 14 at the time and had to share a ST with my bro. The season seemed to come apart with that arsenal match away, we'd beaten liverpool away (steve watson wonder goal and could have had a hattrick) and our reward was another away match at arsenal. Think we'd already beat stoke away 0-4 so luck wasn't on our side with cup draws despite our achievements that season (chelsea AWAY in FA cup too!) Arsenal were pissed off because we'd beat them at home 2-0 quite convincingly in the league and rioch basically had a game plan to hack the shit out of us. I've never seen a team get so little protection from a ref, even Winterburn started walking at one point but then realized the ref didn't give him a second yellow for another x-rated tackle. Lee Dixon was a really nasty piece of shit back then, after getting hacked about 20 times Ginola finally retaliated and smashed the cunt. The pathetic little man rolled around like it was the greatest miscarriage of justice of all time. Ginola wasn't the same after that game and started to shy away from the left flank, predictably coming inside and Sir Les goals dried up. Another really important factor in our season was a challenge by Phil Neville on Keith Gillespie at OT. I don't think he was even booked but Gillespies season was mostly over and he'd been our best outlet with Ginola. In hindsight I wish KK had maybe kept Scott Sellars and Ruel Fox till the end of the season because it was the loss of 2 world class wingers to injury/form that cost us everything that season

wasn't there a similar situation with Derby under allardyce when we lost 1-0. I remember being at the SJP match and we didn't even beat them then and derby went down with an embarrassing points total but 4 points off us. Miller springs to mind

last month a new company was incorporated called Newcastle United Football Club Projects Ltd (companies house no 14525696) classified the Development of building projects. As you'd expect wor mandy and eales are the key people. Could this be significant? or could they just be building a statue of Shola?

i really don't get the food and drink shite, it's only 15 mins and people spend the whole 15 mins in a fuckin queue. Even worse people getting up on 35-40 mins and going...it isn't exactly difficult to get some scran in town. Half time should be time for reflection and a bit natter about what went well/wrong during the half

First time I've sat in level 7 for fucking ages and to be honest despite those around me spending half the time on their phones, the atmosphere was probably better than I expected. The biggest surprise was the leg room!! even adults could remain in their seats whilst you walked past them, more legroom....and what do they do? fill it with bairns

is that all? what if we condensed the home fixtures into 3 weeks and had a game there everyday?

I'd rather go up to Edinburgh and use murrayfield. 67000 capacity

very true. I think there's still some grey area whether FFP applies to ground expansion/new stadiums (has the rules changed recently??). either way I doubt there is a 400m pot to develop the ground at this moment in time

I think that's a good question. But there's probably on a couple of people who could answer that

As I've said before Newcastle United are an investment for the PIF. If they were here just to throw 50 billion quid about, they wouldn't be looking for all these extra revenue streams and sponsorship. But everything they are doing is ultimately boosting the profile of the club, growing it bit by bit and repairing the damage caused by the previous owner. They are even putting things in place that weren't even there before Mike Ashley, I mean football has changed a lot, but Keegans team trained on a lumpy University pitch and shared locker rooms with the public. The money invested last year was to prevent relegation, Burn, Trippier and Targett were actually very shrewd signings in todays game, the surprise was Bruno which was more forward thinking. And the last transfer window wasn't the crazy window forecast that was whipped up by the media, it was slow but solid. Like Bruno, Isak was a surprise, but you can guarantee the transfer was influenced by Callum Wilsons injury and we ended up paying more than what the PIF would have liked to pay. In terms of the ground, they do want to increase capacity, they've said that. But this will come consequence of growth, and european football will be a a great platform to justify that type of expenditure. Quite simply - next 10 years, SJP expansion Beyond 10 years - new stadium if demand is still outweighing a 65000 capacity

I mean that's the sensible outlook but you'd probably be better off putting..... 1. Smash Leazes terrace to pieces, tell the people that live there to clear off if they aren't killed in the destruction. If the council are upset, tell them to fuck off. 2. Dig a tunnel to Beamish underneath Shearers bar. 3. knock down the Milburn and Leazes and import 256 shipping containers 4. Play at Gateshead and sit on a shipping container or bring a chair 5. Build a stadium at the Race course JUST for horses. 89999 horse capacity. Bring a small horse and you can sit in Level 7.5 (if your a horse) 6. Rebuild Leazes terrace at Beamish 7. Build a new state of the art 190000 capacity stadium at Beamish and set up a fanzone at Leazes terrace and sell SJP land to buy Neymar

exactly, I don't know why anyone would want this as it would destroy the club. Yes the arena land if it was available (but it's not) and yes maybe leazes park which is the only option without going out of town or do people think that we'll just flatten 200 square metres of grey street or something? Yes it's going to be very expensive (expansion) but it the long term it's going to be worth it in terms of growing the clubs profile. The saudis won't want to be left behind by Man Utd 74000+ Spurs 63000+ West Ham 62000+ Liverpool 61000+ Man City 60000+ (rumoured) Arsenal 60000 Everton 53000 and also talk of Leeds, Villa, Wolves and chelsea expanding although at least a couple of those are unlikely

I think the defence let Bobbys team down, which is something always attributed to Keegan despite Keegan having the best defensive record apart from Man Utd and Liverpool at the time. It's actually a myth about Keegans team would always win or lose 4-3. The one 4-3 at anfield and I have very faint memories of a 4-3 loss to cambridge (someone can correct me) when we were in the old 2nd division. We chalked a 4-3 win against Villa and that's it I think. With Bobby we could never be the best with O'Brien, Bramble and later on Carr. Even with Woodgate in the team we leaked 6 against Man Utd. I'm picturing Beardsley, Cole, Ferdinand, Ginola running havoc there Anyway, for another thread.....

I think further proof will be staying at St James' Park is Euro 2028. Even if we submitted plans tomorrow for a new stadium I doubt 5 years is enough time. England is destined to get the Euros with Turkey not favourable and as for Russia being successful in their bid.... It will be a shootout between St James' and the Mackem flea pit. Anyone with half a brain would know which one is more desirable without even considering which offers more hospitality, even beyond the actual stadium (or in layman's terms you could ask which city out the 2 is a shithole?) Without doubt, St James' park will need upgraded for the tournament and it's evident that is already happening. I love what the owners have done with the exterior of the ground around the GWC near Bobby's statue, especially when it's lit up at night. And of course like many parts of the ground they've replaced shambolic SD graffiti with NUFC prestige. I would ask one question, If St James' park is selected, will it receive any funding that would 'assist' the massive cost of expansion? I know its not the WC, but I remember the development of German Stadiums prior to that tournament was huge. With the focus on capacity, St James' already meets the criteria for size, but surely it's an opportunity to showcase NUFC on an international stage? and what's better than showing off additions to europe's tallest cantilever right in the middle of the UK's finest most fun city? It's got to be said that in Euro 96 crowds were poor especially with overseas fans (was expensive too), but the city has grown since then and bigger capacity would also encourage them to use St James' for the later stages and not just for group games. The decision for euro 28 will be made on september 2023, by then work will have been mostly completed on strawberry place allowing the club to press on with expansion options. A modest 60000 increase will be likely be the way forward for the immediate future and THEN they'll probably decide if a new stadium is required OR press ahead with another 5000.

    aye, forgot about that. Miscreants

I think the most important thing is that if we look 5-10 years ahead the chances of us playing in front of 52k are very unlikely. Let's say there is 0% chance of expansion, then the only place really is further up barrack road or SJH's castle leazes proposal (arena site not viable) anywhere else is too far away and would be detrimental to progress. I don't think we'd get 75000 in an out of town stadium, especially if the magic wears off. I've got to be honest I think I'd rather watch the match in a fanzone in the city centre than traipse to some soulless lump, it's not about being stuck in the past - it's learning from other clubs mistakes. They can build the Etihad to a 152,000 but it will still be shite compared to Maine road. You only got to look at their league win last season in the last game, a bit confetti and a few half arsed cheers. West ham....what a shambles, if that had happened to the toon I'd of give up on football. Even Roker park outranks the stadium of shite in everyway apart from a far higher number cheap placca seats. mehrdad knows we can get 60000, he's hoping for 65000 but 70000 would be unrealistic with the problems but not impossible YET. Castle Leazes or barrack road would be the next best back up plan but we will just have to be patient until the club is ready to make an announcement. That might be as early as the summer

    St James' Park

mehrdad says somewhere between thermosphere and the exosphere. but only if we can move leazes terrace to somewhere like.....beamish. brick by brick.

    St James' Park

to dig down you need excess room around the pitch. like an olympic running track. We could demolish everything and start again to utilize the space better(or even move further up barrack road as suggested) but that wouldn't make much financial sense right now. Personally I think in 10 years time we will still be at SJP and we will expand somehow because that's what the owners have said is there preference, remember these guys have done the due diligence unlike Mike Ashley who didn't. and famously said things and changed his mind (or just lied) All the little improvements they have made to SJP would be a waste of time if we were going to flatten it
  24. Mr Pups

    St James' Park

we could, but then St James Terrace is about 2 foot from the east stand

    St James' Park

yes, that's right. I suppose like strawberry place, until the first brick gets laid people will see it as an option
