I think qualifying for Europe has allowed him to experiment a little more than he would, if they hadn't won the Carling cup I think he would have took the run in more seriously looking for Europe through a league position. Portsmouth seen to have given the league up too. They'll still finish top 7 though, even top 6 maybe. Add the FA Cup to that and that is a hell of a season for them.
