Slugsy
With all these obstacles to signing players at this time, surely then any signings would respresent really canny and astute business by a club who identified players ages ago and nipped in before anyone else/holidays/euros etc. In fact the astute business you might expect from a crack transfer team, oh wait..... mrmojorisin75
nights sleep and a bit of clarity to add to this discussion (note not a complaint); as slugsy says we've drafted in a crack team of people and i'm 100% certain i've read keegan saying the lists were in for the players he wanted and he'd got a list back from vetere etc... right? now the move for modric suggested to me we had identified at least ONE key signing we wanted to make early and have it secured, that's not really a massive leap to make IMO...now we lost him and i suppose i then fully expected us to move early for the alternate in the same manner, that appears not to have happened (although i'm aware it might be going on as we speak) so either our move for modric was forced by spurs or we don't have an alternate identified yet? again not a huge leap to make i don't think anyone is saying we should have 6 players walking through the door on june 1st but i can't see how it's unreasonable that the club should have moved for a KEY player before getting on the sunbeds think of it in terms of this; securing a signing like modric or an equivalent early in the summer would act as signal of intent to other potential targets and fans alike prior to season ticket renewals - this latter part made me think they'd move early as much as anything else; get the fans excited, sell the tickets out, sell some shirts etc... etc... but there i go pissing and moaning again! EDIT: i should have put in there in i'm aware none of this is absolutely necessary and we could easily wait until during/after the euros to move, just saying the positives of an early move seem to far outweight the negatives IMO, common sense really

Instead of reasons why we can't sign players now, where are the reasons why we CAN and how if we did it would be very, very good business in my opinion, due to many of the reasons outlined in this thread. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes and I certainly can't comment on what our transfer 'team' have been up to, but I would have hoped that identifying and securing players before other clubs would be on their remit - it may be that the players we want won't sign till after the Euros etc, what it will mean is an agonising wait to see if these guys actually produce the goods. EDIT: Just seen your other post - very much agree
Stu
The overwhelming cause of lack of activity at this time of year is the fact that clubs do NOT want to have to pay the huge wages of today's players during the close season if they can avoid it - suppose NUFC signed 3 players who each receive 60,000 pw ; if they joined on, say, 1 June, the club has to pay their wages for around 8 weeks before they are in serious action on the pitch; the total outlay is 60,000 x 3 = 180,000 x 8 = 1.44 MILLION pounds....!! OK, I know there might be one or two sold, but then the clubs buying them are also not keen to be landed with large wages in the close season and in addition, if we are selling players, the odds are that in 9 cases out of 10, it will be to a poorer club...... Not hard to see how hard-headed business types like Ashley etc are reluctant to do deals inwards right now, even though we know that we run the risk of losing our targeted players to other clubs - players wages are far too high, and this is one of the consequences of them, even to clubs like NUFC.. nail. hit. on head. Its a load of tosh considering the contracts cannot start till the 1st July, and with pre season starting mid way through July it really only leave 2 weeks of pay to make up. Yes its very astute to bow to a players agent/owner and let them keep control of the player while he's merely parked at your club before being moved on whenever they feel like it... just so you can beat your rivals to the signing.. The former Toon skipper recalls the summer of 1995 when Newcastle signed the key quartet of Les Ferdinand, Shaka Hislop, Warren Barton and David Ginola. Ex-England man Lee feels that four signings of similar quality are required this summer too, and said: “If Kevin buys the players and the board back him, it’ll be fine. “We could struggle if they don’t let him do that. “I think 12 years ago when we almost won the title, Kevin had all of his business tied up before the end of May. “He knew which players were coming here and it was all done and dusted. “If you don’t get your players in early, you’re on a rocky road because other teams will get there first. “With the Euros going on, it only adds to the hold-ups, too.” looks like rob lee is complaining and all, who'd a thunk it? what's he know anyway? Guest MagFinnPie
United ‘need to make a move’ - Lee May 31 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle ROB LEE admits he is concerned by the lack of transfer activity so far at St James’s Park. “With the Euros going on, it only adds to the hold-ups, too.” On the subject of the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, Lee says the depression of non-qualification is now hitting home in England. The World Cup 98 man added: “You would expect England to be going to Euro 2008 as one of the favourites – but the fact they aren’t even there is unbelievable. “When you look at the players we have at our disposal we probably have the best team in terms of ability since 1966. “You’ve got Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, who are all world-class players. “Somebody has to eventually be able to get this team to play together. “We should have qualified and we haven’t – it’s just unbelievable. “England not being there takes the gloss off the tournament. “It’s always worth watching and I will watch the games, but it starts in the next week or so and I’ve hardly heard a thing about it!” Lee was back on Tyneside today to launch Mars’ summer project to get more football fans playing the game again, and he was on hand to dish out free footballs at the MetroCentre. Lee feels that more organised games of football in Tyneside’s communities could have a big impact on the national team in the future. He said: “When I was growing up, all you wanted to do was be out in the street having a kickabout. “But these days when there are so many temptations with the computer games and stuff like that, the numbers have dwindled. “Sadly with the way that society is today, kids can’t play out on the street. “I have two boys and I wouldn’t let them play in the streets these days. “But we have to encourage more organised games and get kids along to clubs and Academies to help the game in general in England. “England not qualifying for the Euros is evidence that there aren’t enough people playing the game and it traces back to youth football.” WITH a football-free summer for our teams this year, MARS®, is giving Britain a reason to get back into the beautiful game with its Big Ball Giveaway. MARS® is giving away 100,000 footballs and Rob Lee is helping to get the ball rolling at Woolworths, 33/37 Garden Walk (unit 122), Metro Centre, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. Between noon and 3pm today, Rob Lee will be giving away MARS® footballs and signing photographs. The signing is a ticketed event.
