How Ashley can prove he has Newcastle's interests at heart

Simple, do things that will appease the fans (even if it's on the surface).

Appoint Keegan back (even if it's temporary).

Decrease the price of tickets and/or return some of the tickets' prices (even if it's temporary - can always use some excuses to raise it later on when things get better).

Sack Wise if that's what the majority of the fans want (even if he feels Wise isn't in the wrong).

Appear publicly and speaks more often of what the fans want to hear (even if he doesn't mean what he say).

That might calm the situation a bit. And when the situation gets better, sell the club immediately. It doesn't matter who the manager is or who is sacked in the process or what is promised if the final objective is to eventually sell a stable club (which can fetch a higher price upon maturity).

he doesnt have nufc's best interests at heart and to be frank, he shouldnt have to at this point because he is selling up. it is about getting the best deal for him and we can't really move on until this happens. sadly this puts us in a dangerous state of limbo - the longer it drags on with someone like hughton in charge the greater the threat of relegation becomes. it might be in his interests to appoint a specialist interim manager like venables on a (very) short contract, simply in order to protect his asset with view to a sale.

This

There has been no sugestion Keegan wants to come back,

the ticket thing would be a gimmick,

making a scapegoat of Wise or anyone would be a horribly cowardly thing to do,

and the idea of him just telling us 'what we want to hear' whether true or not just turns my stomach.

I can't see how anything like that would help him or the club now, all it would do would just cut away at any respect he still maintains.

While I was happy with him keeping out of the spotlight, I guess it was just not enough for most people, and all he needs now, as before, is simply better communication.

Not to placate the fans. But just to keep them in the loop and feel part of the club again.

Anything else will just be jumped upon with cynical abandon.

I think that's why a lot of people here had reservations about hounding Ashley out. The campaign is only going to be regarded as a success if we get a better owner taking up the reigns fairly soon. Right now we are worse off and pointing fingers to blame this party or that party isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to that.

Venables is an option, quite a good one in my view assuming he's available. How well another cockney wide boy would go down here I don't know, but on a short term basis it will address the situation a lot better than protesting and marching in front of the tv cameras.

We both know the answer to that.  He could be the best manager in the world and certain people would never accept him.  I wonder what the likes of Rob Lee and Sir Les make of the current anti-cockney brigade?

that's true, i just hope any deal can be sorted out quickly, maybe ashley can do a doug ellis and get in the manager the new chairman wants in advance of the deal being completed. that worked well for them. in a way it would be better had ashley maintained the pretence of keeping the club and worked on that premise, while working behind the scenes to do a deal. at the minute we're very seriously undermined.

Beardsley backs besieged Ashley

By Matt Slater

Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley has told Geordie fans to lay off under-fire owner Mike Ashley and thank him for reducing the club's debts.

Ashley put Newcastle up for sale this week when protests revealed the extent of his unpopularity.

But Beardsley, who enjoyed two great spells as a Newcastle player, believes Ashley has been harshly treated.

"He didn't come here to fail and he has put a lot of money into the club, so credit to him," said Beardsley.

"Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out but I'm a little bit disappointed he has to walk away.

"His heart was in the right place. Maybe he didn't always show it in the right way but I think he really cared about Newcastle."

This crucially ties into the current discussion of the club's finances. If Ashley has behaved well in this respect this may mitigate his treatment of Keegan, the transfer policy and so on. We all need to pay attention to details here.

I don't think there is anything crucial about an ex-player trying not cut his ties with the owner of the club. Beardsley knows about as much as any other hanger on does.

This is a pretty Ashley apologistic piece, from this Matt Slater guy, if you read it carefully, it tries to paint a picture of fan impatience and that Ashley's been driven out and done no wrong.
