Guest kingdawson Posted November 7, 2008 Share Posted November 7, 2008 Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a compensation package of £1.7 million with Juande Ramos, their former head coach who was dismissed a fortnight ago after a dismal start to the season. It is understood that the severance payment in his contract was linked to the club’s position in the Barclays Premier League at the time of his departure and, because Tottenham were bottom of the table when the Spaniard left the club last month, Ramos will collect just under half of his £3.5 million-a-year salary. Ramos had threatened to sue the club for far more, his agent insisting last week that he was entitled to 75 per cent of the remaining value of his contract that still had 2½ years to run, but has opted to settle for less in order to bring a speedy resolution to the situation. The Spaniard has remained in England to tie up the final details of his severance package, but is planning to return to Spain in the near future and is hopeful of securing a quick return to management. Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukraine club, opened preliminary talks with his agent, Ginés Carvajal, last week, although Ramos is believed to be holding out for a move to Atlético Madrid. Ramos’s assistants, Marcos Alvarez and Gus Poyet, have also agreed to accept half of their annual salaries, meaning that it will have cost Spurs little more than £2.5 million to dispense with their second management team in a year. The club also had to pay Portsmouth £5 million in compensation to secure the services of Harry Redknapp, though they will consider a combined total of £7.5 million a small price to pay compared with the cost of relegation, particularly as their new manager is on a lower salary than his predecessor. Tottenham’s ability to keep Ramos’s payoff in check shows that they have learnt an important lesson from the departure of Martin Jol 12 months ago, when the absence of a watertight exit clause in the Dutchman’s contract enabled him to walk away with almost £5 million in compensation. Jol’s hand was strengthened by his threat to sue for constructive dismissal, which, given that club officials were photographed meeting Ramos in Seville while the Dutchman was still the manager, was taken extremely seriously. After finally appointing Ramos, Tottenham acted to ensure that they were not similarly exposed in the event of his departure, a prudent measure that has been vindicated. Although they have employed five different managers in as many years, Tottenham are not the only club to have frittered money away on pay-offs. Chelsea coughed up almost £15 million to secure the swift and silent departure of José Mourinho last year, though they too learnt their lesson when sacking Avram Grant eight months later, with the Israeli collecting only one year’s salary.
