It's stinks of one big smoke screen tbh.

Tend to agree with this these days. I stuck up for Ashley for ages on the back of this 'offer' but at the end of the day bids mean nothing.

I find it impossible to believe that the plan B after missing out on Modric was buying Guthrie.

But surely, if you are going to bid then you have the money, what would have happened if he'd agreed to join us? I'm not picking a side and saying you are wrong or Ashley's bullshitting. But the idea of making an offer is that you will actually come through because were we not the team who bid first and spoke to him first? I hardly think Ashley wanted to lose Modric.

I highly doubt Ashley had such a hard on for Modric that he was willing to pay £20m for him but not spend it on anyone else in the world.

Yeah fair point. But if his guys have said buy this guy he will probably just clear the cheque, does that mean we wouldn't get Colocinni ? Who knows. But if Ashley is how McKay says, someone who doesn't suffer fools or like to finish second, I think losing out to Spurs will have pissed him off.

we spent plenty in the summer. one of the highest spending clubs in the world actually.

ashley is still fat though.

We did indeed spend a lot of money.

Danny Guthrie £2.5m

Sebastien Bassong £2

Fabricio Coloccini £9.1m

Francisco Jiminez Tejada "Xisco"£5m

That makes a total of £19.1m,

.....however we also brought in a lot of money through player sales.

David Rozehnal DEF Lazio £2.9m

Emre £3m

Abdoulaye Faye £2.25m

James Milner £12

Which makes around £20.15m coming in.

I've used the 'best' figures that I can find - unfortuately with the lack of transparency we can only go on rumoured transfer fees from news sites and NUFC.com.

As for Modric - Rooney smokescreen in my books.  Mind after watching him, I much prefer Jonas TBH.  Scored a John Dahl Tommasonn 'cracker' last night though.

rozenhal was crap - good price for him. possibly broke even.

emre probably played 1 in 5 and was good for 1 in his 5 - good price, big wages gone. almost broke even. was anyone sad to see him go?

faye wanted to leave - broke even.

milner also wanted to leave - £12 million for an average player hardly anyone rated. also left in the last few days of the window giving us little chance of finding a decent replacement/use for the funds.

all in all, very good business there.

The reply was in regards to how much we spent in summer, not quailty of players.  We actually made a profit on transfers in the summer, which takes us from being one of the biggest spending clubs in the world, to nearer the lowest spending club in the Premier League.  That's one hell of a demotion.

thats the point though. because we did so well selling crap/want away players the net spend looks shit and is looked at as a bad thing.

aye, and that creative midfielder/modric alternative we all knew [manager included] we desperately needed, is flying for us isnt he?

so whats the argument here, that we dont spend money or we dont buy the right players?

Our net spending under Ashley's been pathetic hasn't it?

Er no - you said we've spent a load of cash, when we clearly haven't.  We also spent a load of cash last year (mostly based on player sales again) and bought absolute gash in the likes of Alan Smith as a replacement.

The net spend looks shit (since Ashley came through the door) for one reason, and one reason only.  Because the net spend is shit.

If the rumours about the transfer budget of £6m are true then what has happened to the Milner money?  Or was he sold to make up the deficit, making a nice profit on the net transfer spend to boot?

we have spent plenty. we've also made it back selling players who were either crap or wanted out. win win.

ashely backed the manager (allardyce) and you're saying he bought shit so, again, dont back the manager?

"rumours about the....blah blah". "rumours" being the key word. time will tell.

But Ashley didn't back the manager did he - Allerdyce went on a rant about how they f*cked his plans up by acting too slowly and not getting the first choice players that he had lined up.  Not to mention how he treated Keegan over the summer - full backs!

But let's not digress - the initial post was stating that we had spent loads of money in the summer.  We brought in more. FACT!

would you rather we gave away the players we sold? its pathetic because if we got ripped off selling these players the ashley haters wouldnt shut up about it.

would you rather we give kinnear £50 million this window when he's looking at players like barry ferguson? by your and numerous other peoples standards, we have to back him no matter what.

still, anything to have a dig at fat fatty mike, eh?

In.

Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough - Free)

Joey Barton (Man City - £5.8m)

David Rozehnal (PSG - £2.7m)

Geremi (Chelsea - Free)

Alan Smith (Man Utd - £6m)

Cacapa (Lyon - Free)

Jose Enrique (Villarreal - £6.3m)

Habib Beye (Marseille - £2.5m)

Abdoulaye Faye (Bolton - £2m)

Tamas Kadar (Zalaegerszegi - £900k)

Fabio Zamblera (Atalanta - £300k)

Jonas Gutierrez (Real Mallorca - Undisc)

Danny Guthrie (Liverpool - £2.5m)

Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo La Coruna - £10.3m)

Nile Ranger (Southampton - Free)

Xisco (Deportivo La Coruna - £5.7m)

Aaron Spear (Plymouth - £250k)

Out.

Olivier Bernard (Released)

Titus Bramble (Wigan - Free)

Craig Moore (Queensland Roar - Free)

Pavel Srnicek (Released)

Antoine Sibierski (Wigan - Free)

Scott Parker (West Ham - £7m)

Alan O'Brien (Hibs - Free)

Kieron Dyer (West Ham - £7m)

Paul Huntington (Leeds - Undisclosed)

Nolberto Solano (West Ham - Free)

Albert Luque (Ajax - £2m)

Celestine Babayaro (Released)

David Rozehnal (Lazio - £2.9m)

Emre (Fenerbahce - Undisc)

Abdoulaye Faye (Stoke - £2.25m)

James Milner (Aston Villa - £12m)

The only two transfer fees who seem a mystery are Gutierrez & Emre, so let's just say they were the same (although I'd imagine we'll have spent, or will end up spending more on Jonas than we sold Emre for), that means...

Net Spend - £12.1m

Now given that had Aston Villa not stumped up silly money for Milner, that would be closer to £25m net.

There has not been enough investment in the first team for a long time now.

since shepherd gave souness £50 million?

that went well.

fuck knows   im just on one.

i guess its a combination of the two, i think it was clear what we needed last summer, and we didnt do it, so i guess it smore the positions we are buying.

i also think we were in a position [and still are] where we needed serious investment in most area's, si although we have spent, i do not feel we have spent anywhere near enough.

I bet you're one of those people who thought we actually wanted Wayne Rooney as well...

like booby robson, alex ferguson and wayne rooney himself?

aye, i am.

Immature, I know.

Best pornstar name ever.

But did you honestly think we had a chance of signing him?

rooney says himself he was ready to come if man utd hadnt come in for him, so aye, i do.

at least we had a fucking go, we wont be doing that again anytime soon, thats for sure.

38 million wasn't it?, well he gambled didn't he.  He gambled on a complete fucking spacka with all the money the club had.

This is why i can not forgive Shepherd for a second.  Insane, totally insane decision.

would it be a better or worse decision to give significant funds to (probably) a worse manager who's judgement is looking questionable and who's (hopefully) only here for 5 more months?

Well tbh we are fucked.  We have now got ourselves in to a situation where we have to spend in this transfer window because of the mistakes of the last few transfer windows.  Our sqaud is so thin we cant even handle a couple of injuries.

We are now trying to buy players in a transfer window where the price will be stupid and competing against other clubs.

We have no choice but to let JK spend money as the team has to be invested in.

FS should have been more sensible and never appointed a spacka like Souness, he had ample time to make a decision but failed.

thats exactly it. if we spend big and kinnear goes, we'll need a new squad for the next manager. if we dont spend, lots of shit will hit several fans.

its going to be a long year  :weep:

What the hell are you on about - as I have stated on a  number of occasions on this thread you stated that we had spent a lot of money.  I pointed out that we had brought more in, after which you then went off at a tangent about quality etc.

Now you go on to assume that I think that we should back the current manager to the hilt.  If I had my way then he wouldn't be any where near the club, but once he has been hired he has to backed to some extent.  Although, isn't that what Little Dennis is supposed to be doing and bringing in the players, not the manager?

As Far as Ashley is concerned, he deserves having a dig made after failing to invest in the squad, coming up with nothing but excuses when investment was required and the overall running of the club in the past six months.

Ashley clearly doesn't give a fuck anymore, he was trying to sell the club ffs. If he got a decent offer he wouldn't even be owner anymore.

It's probably true that Ashley isn't going to spend big any time soon. Is it a lack of ambition? The answer's probably yes...but the problem is, there's no one out there with ambition to buy the club and show how it should be done. There is no ambitious alternative for Newcastle United so all we are left with is moaning about our ambitious past.
