NOLAN DEMANDS CHANGE AT TOON

KEVIN NOLAN has told owner Mike Ashley to sell Newcastle before the end of the summer transfer window, or start investing in new players.

Nolan fears striker Obafemi Martins’ £9 million move to German champions Wolfsburg will open the floodgates, as Newcastle try to cope with their crippling wage bill – the highest in the Championship.

French defender Sebastien Bassong is edging towards a £10m move to Spurs and Aston Villa are set to beat Hull to £3m-rated full-back Habib Beye.

Nicky Butt is wanted by Wolves, Alan Smith is a loan target for Blackburn and South American pair Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini are eager to leave. On Sunday in a pre-season friendly at Dundee United, Nolan was pressed into service as a makeshift striker alongside Andy Carroll, underlining the lack of depth available to caretaker boss Chris Hughton.

Nolan, whose side kick off their campaign at West Brom on Saturday, said: “We’re just trying to get on with things on the pitch, but it’s major decision time for the people upstairs.

“One thing we may have to do if things stay the way they are is bring in a couple of new faces.

“Everyone will find it difficult to come here because of the fans and the club’s great history. But if Newcastle come calling, not many people will put the phone down.”
