Newcastle put contract talks on hold

As pointed out though, it didn't seem to bother them when handing out new deals to tripe like Butt, Ameobi and probably Carroll. Those players are cheap though.

As underwhelming as it is, it's a sensible thing to do and it makes sense. The danger of us going down is pretty clear, and if we do, we're going to lose about two thirds of the squad. Lose the likes of Shola aswell - whilst he's shite - would leave us with nothing next season. Also, as you said, those players are much cheaper and have manageable wages in the Championship. Offer Owen a brand new £100,000 contract, and we go down, and we'll be royally fucked financially.

It's purely insurance. Don't really blame them. The players have probably refused to sign new contracts until it's confirmed we'll stay up, aswell. Again, i can't blame them.

Even if they were to hand contract offers to the likes of Bassong etc, why would he sign it until he knows what division we are playing in next year. The reason Ameobi, Carroll and Butt signed theirs was because they are Championship at best and if we are in the premiership that's a bonus.

Correct, and also - why would Bassong sign a new contract now knowing he would get a better deal when/if the club secures PL-status.
