I'm not 100% definite, but all La Liga players have to have a clause in their contract that lets them leave if a certain fee is matched. Definitely rung a few bells when gggg posted, Messi will probably know better than me.

Had a buy out clause of somewhere around £38-£40m.

Aye I was aware of the rule now but didn't think that it was around then, and was so low as £40m. One of Sportings great youth products.

They didn't have a choice as his minimum fee release clause was met. Iirc Figo told Pérez that he would go to Madrid if he won the elections and they had a bid accept as he thought there was no chance they would be able to match his minimum fee release clause.
