Guest PhilB
Genuine questions: Did the families of the 39 murdered Juventus fans of Heysel in '85 ever get an apology from Liverpool FC? Did any of the Liverpool fans ever face criminal charges for causing the deaths of the Juventus fans? Just wondering like. A delegation of city council, club and police went over to Belgium the day after and also to Turin. Over the intervening years various Liverpool fan clubs, the Club itself and official delegations from the City of Liverpool have reached out and made contact with the City of Turin, Juventus, the families of the dead (not all of them, obviously - some didn't want to talk), other civic groups in Turin and various youth groups. There are not too many other groups to which the Liverpool side of the aisle can reach out. These links have been forged over 25years and are very strong. As far as I know there are serious problems between the families of the dead and Juve to this day. These problems are related to the way the families feel they have been treated by the Club, it's felt that LFC have done more to commemorate what happend than Juventus have over the last 25 years. The prosecution of those involved was entirely down to Belgium authorities. The British police, Merseyside force in particular, did everything they could to track down the instigators, and after doing so it was up to the Belgium authorities to punish them in a way fitting to the crime. It's been said that they, and UEFA, wanted it brushed under the carpet and disposed of as quickly as possible. There's two commemorative plaques at Anfield, one has been there since the early days, and one was dedicated on the 25th anniversary.
