To be fair, every story bar the Ben Afra one just appears to be the usual speculative bollocks.

Case in point - "Sources in the North West last night suggested that should Newcastle fail in their bid to re-sign N’Zogbia, they may turn their attention to cut-price alternative Keith Treacy." What Tripe.

Stephen Ireland is back on the radar of Alan Pardew

Jun 26 2011 by Mark Douglas, Sunday Sun

STEPHEN IRELAND is back on Newcastle United's radar. The Aston Villa star endured a hugely frustrating spell at St James' Park at the back end of last season, but Alan Pardew and his coaching team saw promise in the injury-hit midfielder.

Enough potential, it seems, for them to ask his agent to keep them in the loop on his availability – with a view to a cut-price August swoop for the Irish playmaker.

With loans off the agenda at St James’ Park for the time being, Newcastle would be prepared to pay around £2million for Ireland.

Villa wanted an unreasonable £5million in January but may be prepared to cut their losses on a player who has not settled in the second city.

Ireland was heading out of the door under Gerard Houllier, but with a new manager installed at Villa Park, there is a slim chance he may be able to resurrect his troubled Villa career.

But after enjoying working with Pardew the player himself is understood to favour a move back to the North East – and would jump at the chance to re-join Newcastle.

A senior United source said: “Nothing is imminent with Stephen, but it is not one to write off just yet.

“He might not have played but he was unlucky with injuries and his attitude and work-rate while he was here were absolutely first class.

“He was finished at Villa under Gerard Houllier but a new manager might change things for him.

“He would like to come back but it depends on Villa now.

“I think Stephen is one that we’ll keep an eye on with a view to maybe ‘nicking him’ at the end of the window.”

Signed when injured, Ireland made only two substitute appearances for Newcastle after a combination of ankle, knee and thigh problems kept him on the sidelines.

But the player is now injury-free and hoping to relaunch his career next season.

£2m and injury-free and I wouldn't be too disappointed.

Don't really see the point, though.

Yes I agree. There's a fair proportion on here though who will have the pitch forks and burning torches out if he signs.

We made a mistake bringing him in in January, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be a bad mistake now as was all fitness related last season.

This. Undoubted ability, and a good pre season to get his fitness back up in a more familiar team would do him, and us, good in the long run. Fingers crossed it turns out well if he does re-sign

There is nothing to that story whatsoever. Usual substanceless red top shite. Also, Ireland is a total oxygen thief and I wouldn't take him on a free.

What are you talking about? He didnt get injured on purpose.

If this is true, then we must have been impressed with something over the last 5 months to have tried getting him back permanently.

Apart from the fact the story isn't from a red top.

I hope the days of signing players like smith, duff, luque, campbell are over, so no thanks to Ireland. I guess he is on massive wages in Villa, and would only come if offered simulare here...

We'd not be signing him I doubt if he was after similar here.

I think his main issue at Villa was that O'Neill signed him an then Houllier came in who had a problem with him. Similar to when Guivarch signed for us, Gullit made it very clear that he didn't rate him and his form and confidence were awful whenever he played.
