L'Equipe: Modibo Maiga fails medical; transfer 'abandoned'

Recommended Posts

Gary Jacob in the Times says we have agreed a deal to sign Maiga in January. No fee mentioned, but likely to be less than the £10m Sochaux were holding out for. Player has agreed a 4 1/2 year deal, subject to not being injured before the end of the season.

Newcastle United close to deal to sign Mali striker Modibo Maiga

Published on Saturday 29 October 2011 12:31

MODIBO Maiga is set to become a Newcastle United player in January – and bring an end to the club’s long-running search for a striker, writes Miles Starforth.

Talks between the club and French club Sochaux have been at an advanced stage in recent weeks.

And sources in France have claimed a deal is now in place for Maiga to join in the next transfer window, though United have declined to comment.

Newcastle tried and failed to land the 24-year-old, rated in the £7m bracket, in the summer.

The Mali international even went on strike to secure a transfer to St James’s Park, but Sochaux blocked a move and reported the club to Fifa, alleging unauthorised contact with Maiga.

However, negotiations were eventually restarted, and highly-rated Maiga, pictured right, is poised to become a belated replacement for Andy Carroll, who joined Liverpool 10 months ago in a £35m deal.

The England international left on transfer deadline day in January’s transfer window, leaving Newcastle no time to sign a replacement.

United’s abortive attempts to sign a forward in the summer’s angered fans.

However, the failure to strengthen Newcastle’s attack has not hampered Pardew’s fourth-placed side, who have gone on to make an impressive start to the season, with Demba Ba and Leon Best having scored eight league goals between them.

And the arrival of Maiga will further strengthen his forward options, which also include Hatem Ben Arfa, going into the second half of the campaign.

Maiga scored 15 Ligue 1 goals last season, and has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe.

However, he made it clear he wanted to join Newcastle in the summer, claiming it was his “dream” to play for them in the Premier League.

Newcastle United move in for Modibo Maiga

    by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

    Oct 29 2011

NEWCASTLE United are determined to get their business done sooner rather than later in the January transfer window.

And sources in France have indicated to the Chronicle that Sochaux star Modibo Maiga is the hot favourite to be the first new face through the door in the New Year.

It is clear that the 24-year-old Mali international wants to be pulling on a black-and-white shirt in 2012.

The addition of Maiga would be a massive boost for Newcastle fans who have seen their side miss out in previous transfer windows.

It is also believed that the Magpies will look to bolster their defensive ranks, with cover needed at the heart of defence and in the full-back area – with PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters still on the Toon’s radar.

United officials have been overwhelmed by the success of their season ticket offer this week, with the club having to call in extra staff to cope with demand, and the home showdown with Everton on November 5 looks set to attract the highest crowd of the season by some margin.

And the Magpies being dumped out of the Carling Cup this week didn’t stop 7,000 eager fans attending yesterday’s open training session at St James’.

Also in attendance were two of the men who will be key to securing the new year arrivals – chief scout Graham Carr and secretary Lee Charnley.

When approached by the Chronicle about whether the Maiga transfer is set to go through in early January, United declined to comment on the situation.

But Maiga has his heart set on the move and last August went on strike in order to push a deal through, a ploy that failed to land him the transfer of his dreams.

Yet this has not affected his form in Ligue 1 with four goals and two assists in his seven matches so far this season for Sochaux.

He'll still be away in January for the African Cup of Nations won't he?

probably but still good to get it sorted

Would be nice to get in a player on loan for the months it is on. Don't fancy being left with Best, Lovenkrands and Ranger  :undecided:

Good bit of news this is.

Not sure there's any news just yet. Seems to be on the cards though.

Why the thread title change then?

Previously it was only L'Equipe reporting it to be completed by the end of that week.

Mentions Peters as left back/centre back cover in the Chronicle too, decent couple of additions them two like.

If true then that would be good bit of business. Then I would like to see Peters on the left and Santon on the right.
