Whatever our other qualities, we are one of the worst passing sides in the Premiership. No amount of stats will convince me otherwise.

Have to disagree with this. Think we pass the ball well from defence and midfield, it's just the options and movement in final 3rd which isn't up to scratch and is poor. We can dominate possession when we intend to do it, sadly we just aren't asked to do that enough for whatever reason Pardew thinks.

We seem to spend a lot of time knocking the ball between the back four and the midfield, with players running backwards into space to receive the ball, rather than forward. Anyone can do that kind of passing.

Of the front six that started against Arsenal, we only had one player, in Cabaye, who can pass the ball well.

so from that

  • 16th for crosses per game
  • 17th for long balls per game
  • 10th for short passes per game
  • 10th highest possession %
  • 10th highest pass success rate
  • 4th best for winning aerial duels
  • score most of our goals from open play
  • we attack mostly down the wings (right hand side to be precise)
  • 12th worst side for yellow cards

Anita is also a lovely passer of the ball. Like i mentioned it's when likes of Anita/Cabaye are picking up the ball, be it deep or final third, the movement around them needs to be a lot better. That's why our passing doesn't get into full flow moving forward because our movement is awful.

Anita showed how simple it can be when he used Obertan as basically a brick wall against Chelsea. Credit to Debuchy, he seems to have a great understanding with Cabaye and he's always looking to move when the chance develops. Cisse seemed to have a telepathic understanding with him up to a point too.

That’s the problem with our current side though, we don’t seem to have players on the same wave length and partnerships haven’t been built from an attacking point of view. Sissoko/Debuchy is probably the one that has formed the best so far but it’s hardly a Shearer/Bellamy or a Robert/Bernard.
