aye, according to Mick, the 70's expert, you''re running a selling club, just like McKeag etc did, but at least they didn't spend all the clubs money on pies and whores you fat bassa

Disgraceful going to brothels like, who would ever do such a thing...you should be sat at home eating your tea every night with your suit on, telling wifey how much you love her and wondering where the next loaf of bread is coming from on account of you working for the club for nothing

You cant really put the blame on Shepherd can you? Its not his job to judge whether a player is goog enough or not.

eeerrrr....so you think that the chairman should overrule his managers judgement on footballers ?

elbee starts melting, DOES NOT COMPUTE

The bigger picture also being of course, that pre-1992, we could only dream of setting transfer records and paying money for players such as we paid for Luque whether he is a flop or not, like the other top clubs, this being the subject of the thread "are we a selling club" and Mick insists that we are still a selling club just like when we sold Gazza, Beardsley and Waddle.

Question. What would you do if we bought Beckham [ex or recently discarded England Captain at 31 years old] and sold Zoggy, Duff and Owen ? Selling club or ambitious club ........ I asked Mick a similar question and he chickened out of it. Or he's taking his time. Do you know why he is taking his time ?

Whats your opinion based on the facts ? You can answer that question above too if you like.

Investors fighting for seat at top table with Abramovich

By Matt Dickinson

AND so another big beast of the Barclays Premiership begins to stir. These are early days in the possible takeover of Newcastle United, but even the faintest hint that Freddy Shepherd could be ousted as chairman is enough to make Geordie hearts skip with excitement.

Coming on the back of the imminent departure of Doug Ellis from Aston Villa, it raises the hope that two grand clubs could start to punch their weight, even if they are not yet ready to start roughing up the Premiership’s elite quartet. Randy Lerner at Villa Park and the Belgravia Group up at St James’ Park must prove their credentials, but few will believe that they can be worse than the previous guys in charge.

Ellis used to order his managers, by written memo, to turn off the lights at the training ground to save on electricity, which hardly fostered an ambitious corporate vision. Martin O’Neill is no mug. He accepted Ellis’s invitation to step into the dugout fully aware that he would soon be working for a more ambitious boss.

Shepherd may have given his managers plenty of cash to squander, but a chairman’s job is also about leadership, about setting a tone at a club, and he revealed everything about his lack of class when he undermined Sir Bobby Robson and then dismissed Graeme Souness by letter rather than man to man. Shepherd once said that he would step down as soon as Newcastle won a trophy, a cruel promise that has guaranteed his longevity.

The Belgravia Group is described as an expert in property, equity and derivative funds, but, while that may not equip it to discuss the merits of Jean-Alain Boumsong with Shepherd, it sounds clever enough to leave that part to the experts. The chairman will be reluctant to move on, in which case the Geordie nation needs to give him a hefty shove.

Good vibes in Newcastle and Birmingham should filter across the rest of the country. Can there be too much wrong with a sport that has investors fighting for a seat at the table alongside Roman Abramovich? Intentions are hard to detect, but fears of an invasion of asset strippers have proved unfounded so far. The worst financial damage to a Premiership club was inflicted by a diehard fan in Peter Ridsdale at Leeds United. Alexandre Gaydamak has been pouring funds into Portsmouth and even the Glazers appear to have caught a mild case of the spending bug.

“The game that ate itself” was how one Sunday newspaper summed up the state of English football about 12 months ago, but that was before Richard Scudamore, the Premiership chief executive, extracted £1.7 billion from Sky and Setanta to allow the 20 clubs to gorge themselves again.

The Glazers were able to realign their debts at Manchester United on the back of that massive deal and, for those sniffing around the market, income is guaranteed until 2010. Expansion at Old Trafford and the new Emirates Stadium may lead to record attendances in the Premiership.

There have been enough cautionary tales in football to establish what follows a boom and, with his background in American sport, Lerner is among those who believe that some kind of capping will have to be introduced to stop the escalation of wages and fees. But, as he will find out at his first meeting with the rest of the Premiership chairmen, that is for tomorrow and, as long as the money is flowing, English football is far too caught up in the buoyant here and now.

Rooney’s bully-boy tactics are a low blow

YOU may have missed the age of humility among England players since Germany 2006. It lasted all of the few days it took Wayne Rooney to threaten to go on strike.

Guided by his agent, Paul Stretford, the Manchester United forward wrote to the FA threatening to withdraw from all England commercial activities because the governing body had dared to ban him for three matches for a pre-season sending-off. To think that Stretford’s job is to protect the player’s reputation rather than portray him as a brat who is above the law.

“To Paul Stretford, for his wisdom and advice,” Rooney wrote in the acknowledgements to his autobiography. Remarkably, the reference is not ironic, although it may have to be updated now.

Whether or not Rooney was harshly dealt with by an independent disciplinary panel, Stretford’s attempts to hold a gun to the governing body was a gesture designed not to overturn the verdict but to intimidate the FA for when the striker is back in trouble. He knows that his player is the organisation’s most high-profile asset post-Beckham and is attempting to flex his muscles in the crudest fashion.

Sadly, mindful that Rooney has many more years left as England’s world-class talisman, the FA has declined to release a forceful response.

United could come back to haunt United

WHEN someone recently congratulated Manchester United’s hierarchy on banking £12 million for John Obi Mikel, given that they had never indisputably owned him in the first place, there was a rueful shake of the head. “We’d much rather have had the player,” they replied.

A brief glimpse of the teenage midfield player in a Chelsea shirt on Sunday was enough to deepen the regrets at Old Trafford. With touch, athleticism and a physique like Patrick Vieira after a body-building course, it was easy to see why the champions fought so hard to bring him to the capital.

Mikel once posed in a United No 21 shirt but Chelsea are confident that they have landed one of the world’s great enforcers.

5th best in the last decade, only 4 have done better.

FACT.

You can also answer Micks question for him too if you like....

And so far as Souness is concerned, he can attack him with a pick axe for all I care

FACT.

A statistic that is based on inferences drawn from many selectively derived sources isn't necessarily a hard and fast fact; it's an interpretation.  You can't use absolute superlatives based on your criteria.  While you may have your criteria, someone else will point to e.g. a complete lack of silverware as proof that your criteria aren't valid.  It's a bit like the old, never-ending 'we're a bigger club than <whoever>' arguments, where those debating the points are totally not objective parties and base their declarations on whatever suits them.

Argue the case, sure, but don't state it as 'FACT' all the time as by definition, it's not.

I'm still solid thankfully.  What I think should or should not be the case isn't the point.  Does it happen?  No matter what I think should or should not be the case, does it happen?  What do you think?  If you think the Chairman doesn't interfere with football matters then you tell me if he decides the appointment or sacking of his managers, and in tuirn players.

All I'm saying is Freddie rubber-stamped the Luque deal.  But then he did that with Souness too.  Hell, it was a cheap jibe as you love to be negative about Luque, while unerring positive about Freddie.  That's all it was!

My real guess is that he can't be bothered arguing with you, and it's not necessarily because you're right, more your usual attitude towards whomever it is you're arguing.  You come across as rabid a lot of the time.

If we did what you said, taking that example, I'd say we were a selling club.  What's true is that sometimes a club is a selling club, sometimes it's a buying club.  It's not as simple as being one or the other anymore.

Because he can't be bothered?

I know you're not stupid, but if you think his silence is indicative of anything other than an inability to dispute the facts that have been presented then something is stopping you from being objective. ( Can't imagine what that is, like )

I'm not really sure why Mick started the thread he later deleted on discovering that he couldn't dig up facts to support whatever his opinion is/was. However, having started that thread with some motive in mind it shows a distinct lack of integrity by failing to carry it through to the conclusion of the debate.

I deleted the thread because it looked like it was becoming a slagging match, no other reason.

I'm sure I said that I was looking out of interest and that was the only motive so I have nothing to hide especially when it looks almost certain that we spent more than we brought in through selling.

As for carrying it through, I'm not in a position to add anything to the last time I posted figures.

As for the Times' article making reference to the disrespectful manner in which Shepherd handled Clueless' sacking. Souness has some mates in the media, and this opinion doesn't really take into account the circumstances of the day ie. as per below.

Clueless hardly did a 'Gullit', as far as walking into Shepherd's office - amidst or even in the wake of the multitude of pathetic performances prior to his sacking - and finally & honourably admitting that he was well & truly out of his depth. Like McKeag, he was prepared to cling onto his position for dear life until he was forcibly removed. These two incompetants taking the ship down with them as they held out for one last 'payday' was irrelevant, collateral damage in their books.

The final acts of Robson's tenureship should've been handled with a greater degree of integrity, however if there was one bastard/useless prick who truly deserved an inglorious send-off, via an impersonal sacking as was delivered by Shepherd, it was Souness.

It is a stonewall, cast iron FACT, that over the last decade, only 4 clubs have achieved a higher average league position, appeared in europe more than us, appeared in more FA Cup Finals than us. Indisputable.

It is also a FACT, that for decades prior to the 1992 takeoever, there were anything between 12 and 20 clubs who consistently achieved these things more than we did, that is a lot of clubs we have overtaken since that time, and stayed above them. Fact.

We should have kept Bellamy obviously, and threw Souness off the Tyne Bridge, however I think you should address that particular question to many others on here, one of which is grassroots, who staunchly said we should back Souness with as much money as we could find from anywhere and give him his own team before judging him, and also STILL says we are better off without Bellamy

Meanwhile, there are plenty of potential recruits to your crusade talking about the club shelling out millions more on the transfer threads.

Bt it is selective use of FACTS, that you moaned on in your own inimitable way about when you perceived I was being selective on another thread.

Our average league postion is 9th. Only 4 sides may better than that, but generally 8 teams finish above us each season. The feel good factor of having 8 teams above you isn't as good as the feel good factor of finishing 5th. That 5 of the last ten years have had bottom half finishes adds to the sense that we aren't 5th best.

We may have played in 2 FA Cup finals in the last decade, but again the feel good factor for people about those two appearances isn't very high. Boro have appeared in 5 major finals in the same period, not something that makes me feel happy.

Just wondered if you were selective in which sales you viewed as beiing good/bad. I like the way you slide the problem off on to someone else rather than stickign to your won opinions. Shepherd appointed Souness to sort out the bad boys, like a real man. That is why Bellamy is playing CL football for Liverpool now
