stozo
Must say this current crop of academy players are looking rather impressive at the moment. Just look at the reserves last night - 15 year-old Donaldson started, so did 16 year-old Kazenga, 17 year-old Darren Lough and Alex Francis started in central defence, 16 year-old Mark Bertram started at RB, 17 year-old Cowan came on for Bernard and then 17 year-old Godsmark came on to score the equiliser. On top of all these kids playing for the reserves they managed to get a away draw against a team fielding much older players and with six players who have started for there first team. Think in a few years we will start seeing some of these kids come through.
Cajun
I hope so because with the way Roeder does transfer deals it will take a few years to sign anyone!

Aye,you are completely right about the academy players. There seems to be alot of talented young boys out there The only thing that can develop is like someone said on the board,we can bring some young international talents here although it would be difficult as we all know Newcastle its not London, but you have to start from somewhere. Right now the only two academy boys who are black are Ameobi and Kazenga. If we bring more international players to the academy it will only going to be for the good of the academy.Look at Arsenal.Wenger can play in the Premiership with his academy kids and im sure that he will not get relegated O0

Unfortunately we have the same problems as when we try and sign players - we are not in London, or a top team in Europe.

Theres always a few desperate to start squealing "racist !!!" Although to be fair, I dont think the ones who did were doing it too seriously. Saying we needed more foreign players and then making the point that we've only got two black players that have come through the academy - one of whom was English anyway - made no sense. That's all. And these countries are producing the best players in the world??? Actually, I would rather us signing players from the odd countries than those from popular countries like Brazil, France etc. Chances are that the cream from Brazil, France etc have been taken by other more popular clubs. Those elites from less popular countries, while could be less skillful, could be more competitively minded and ambitious.

Howaythelads
Well done, Fred. Fantastic planning by funding a successful academy, scouting system and coaches. Fred deserves a big pat on the back for bringing these lads through as an alternative to wasting millions of the clubs' (oops, I mean "our") money. Well done, Glenn as well. He's clearly a 'yes man', but hey, Fred told him to bring these lads through so he snapped his fingers and hey presto, he's doing it. Magic.
stozo
Which players are the stand outs? Kazenga LuaLua is meant to be the best of them. Would expect to see him get a first team game before he is 17 and I wouldn't be surprised if he became our youngest ever first team player.
