Shay Given At Fault For Both Goals

The College Dropout

Recommended Posts

perhaps Prima Donna is the wrong word to use.

Perhaps I should call them individuals.

Right now, we have a team of individuals rather than a team. Given is an individual, not a team player. We need to builsd a team, starting from the back, and for me, Given is expendable if we could sign someone like Ben Foster, or even Man City's Isaksson.

i want to keep Given, but get rid of Championshipplayers like Shambles, Babayaro etc, and get GOOD defenders in.

Playing Hunty at LB was the core of the problem...NOT BUYING a left back in 2 windows is the CORE  of that problem and the core of THAT problem is ROEDER.

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the goalie in part responsible for every goal?

I mean, by the very definition of a goalie

Shay is deffo better when he 'arches' his back... ^-^ He has one of the best shot stopper back arches in the game....He hasn't a clue where the goal posts are but no matter.

The Shay-bashing always shows up after every bad defeat.

I won't even bother bandering about the useless "world class" debate, but I don't think anyone here can disagree that his saves for us FAR outnumber his mistakes. End of.

Aye he does good stuff, but fact is, he is a prima donna. Football is a team game, and he never plays his part in the team, instead just living off his own individual moments of brilliance, which is why we'll never win anything while he is between the sticks.

In my eyes, there is no difference between Shay Given and Laurent Robert.

Most Improved Poster 2006.  Just how fucking bad were you prior to that?

And this is exactly why there is a "Gemmill Appreciation Thread" in GC

Given: Our season is over now

Mar 16 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Shay Given was left to rue the fact that he will soon complete 10 years as a Newcastle United player without a trophy in sight after last night's dismal UEFA Cup exit in Holland.

But the Republic of Ireland international was quick to admit that United only had themselves to blame after twice holding a three-goal advantage in the 4-2 win over AZ Alkmaar at St James' Park last Thursday.

However, unlike the majority of his colleagues, at least Given had the grace to salute United's 1,000-strong travelling Toon Army on the final whistle.

Given made his 62nd European appearance for United last night - nobody else has topped 50 - and this one has to be one of the most disappointing.

He told me after the game: "We probably didn't deserve anything on our performance.

"It's frustrating. We were all over them in the first leg - and created a lot of chances - but we didn't do that here tonight.

"What can we say? We've let the fans down again.

"The whole team didn't play well, and we're out of Europe, so it's the end of the season.

"I don't know if this is worse than Sporting Lisbon.

"You look at the teams left and think you've got a chance, but you've got to perform on the night.

"We didn't do that, and we've got to take the flak as a team.

"You can't single out anyone - it was the whole team. What can you say apart from roll on next season?

"But at the minute we're just very disappointed, and there's not much you can say after that."

Given - making his 408th appearance for the club - went up for an injury-time Newcastle corner, and the goalkeeper admitted if he ever was to grab his first goal for United, that would have been the time.

He added: "I've never scored a goal before, but it would have been a nice time.

"But it was miles over my head - it was nowhere near me, to be honest."

If Given was replaced with a more commanding goalie, do people think the rabble infront of him would improve? Serious question..

Goalkeepers have the ability the ability to relieve the defence by coming and collecting crosses...Shay doesn't do this and subsequently adds pressure to the already VERY fragile defence. But a goalie can't make crap players good.

please, don't waste anymore of your precious time with bullshit threads like this..

Thank you for your contribution and thoughtful criticism of the subject discussed.

Lets put it this way.

Let's assume that I gave you 10m to get a goalie. (****, that's pretty silly money for a 'keeper even)

Name one that would come here and would be a significant improvement over Shay.

You must REALLY hate Babayaro, Carr, Bramble, Ameobi etc, then

None frustrate me so much as Given though, he could be the best keeper in the world if he had the correct application in the game.

taylor this is NOT opinion, it is fact, your talking 100% idiotic bullshit. i thought you were just being usual wum taylor but this posts seems to be serious.

on topic i think that he could have done a bit more for the first but to blame him for the goal when bramble, huntington and taylor were all more to fault is a bit harsh. Taylor was fucking retarded by the way. if he was any older i'd be saying get rid right now, but since he's still u21 i'll put it down to lack of experiance.

Given is the last man we should be blaming right now

Our defence is f****** disgrace and Given saved us so many times that for all of you who are criticising Shay Given i wiill say only i thing:

f*** off

I agree that Given should be either the last, or second last player to be blaming for our season, but he should still be blamed.

I agree with that. He's a good player no doubt but he is not blameless.

ffs, for the first goal Taylor just stood and watched the ball go past him, and it's not as if he got a call from Shay to leave it.  It's not as if it was hard to just knock it out for a corner.

Practically all the defenders played a part in their first goal

Shay has always played a part in our poor defensive displays.

Read before you reply. The defenders played the part as everyone has already said. However Shay has gone uncriticized despite the ball going through his 6 yard box. THE GOALIE MUST COMMAND HIS 6 YARD AREA, any touch from there and the ball is likely to go in the net. The defenders were shambolic but Shay isn't the magnificent goalkeeper we often make out.

Just dont see it.

The first goal - sure, Shay could have anticipated Taylor failing to cut the cross out, but thats different to it actually being "his fault". Taylor should have dealt with that cross, it was his to cut out, I would expect any centreback to cut that out, and because he didnt, it caught Shay out because there was only a split second in which Shay could have reacted.

The second goal, bollocks. If Shay had known the ball would be whipped in to the near post and therefore positioned himself for that type of near-post headed chance as opposed to staying in the centre and covering both posts with a man on the line, he wouldnt have bothered turning up for the game. He wouldnt even be a professional footballer, because hed be the only man on this planet with the ability to forsee the future. Hed be travelling the world bleeding casino's and bingo halls dry with that kind of foresight. Shay would make Henry Sugar look like a petty thief.

I never said it was his fault but he played a part which goes by unnoticed. Taylor was at fault for letting the cross come in but it's Shay's job to anticipate a mistake by atleast taking a bloody step forward...a striker should anticipate a mistake from a defender as should a goalkeeper.

I admit for the second goal I am reaching alittle but the fact remains that the ball practically went through Shay and he was basically standing inside his goal but for a man the size of Shay to come through a pack of that size would be very hard.

I'm not blaming his but he isn't as blameless as people believe.

by the by according to A.K's how to score past the toon bit brambles been responsible for only one goal all season. i know its heavily subjective but i reckon if this is the case then i would be happy for bramble to start alongside a new defender in august. He's a good defender at times, if he can sort his mental issues out

Eh? Does this mean whenever Shay makes a mistake he shouldn't be criticized because we can't find a better alternative. Anyway I'll probably get lynched for this I reckon David James or even Jens Lehmann are better goalkeepers than Shay.
