The Olympiakos defender travelled over to Tyneside last week and was put through his paces by Roeder's coaching staff. Roeder is eager to revamp his defence and handed a trial to a player who will be available on a free transfer. The Turk felt he had made a decent impression during his trial, but Roeder has revealed he will not be taking his interest further. "The lad has already gone back home and we will not be signing him," Roeder told the Evening Chronicle. Now there's a suprise

On that topic: watching Lee Clark and Nigel Pearson standing round doing nowt before the game was supreme entertainment, surely they could be doing something useful while the fitness coach is working with the starting eleven? Then, when Pearson is called into action to "coach" Onyewu and Taylor with long-balls from the halfway line for them to deal with (replicating goal-kicks), his first one ends up in the East Stand, the next four towards Onyewu when the bloke was blatantly looking at Taylor after the first (one for him, one for you, etc.), then the rest of them drop about 10 yards ahead of the centre-halves, rendering the entire thing utterly useless, because the balls end-up with Onyewu after a few bounces. Then they stroll up to the halfway line and start passing it around, the whole thing seemingly nothing more than an utter waste of time, considering out of about 10/12 kicks, Onyewu got about 3 headers and Taylor got 1. The rest were off-target. Summed things up for me. The Bulut thing was also a complete waste of time, judging by reports.

Get to the ground 40 minutes or so early, and you'll see the opposition going through some well-drilled routines in groups of 6 or 7 players, rotating through the different routines. Cast your eyes to the other end of the pitch if you want to see some head tennis and a group of lads standing around laughing and chatting about what they did the night before with the odd stretch and bit of sideways skipping thrown in for good measure. Two players pairing up and kicking the ball 40 yards to one another is another one - oooooo, can you kick it? Yes you can. Well done.

Rich
Being right down the front of the Gallowgate, I can barely see what the other teams are up to at the Leazes so it's difficult to compare, but it does strike me as being utter shite when your assistant manager (former player, no less) cannot kick a ball 45 yards (out of his hands) into a position for one of two players to head it - even if it is windy. Guest Stephen927
Didn't really expect him to get a deal. When we played Chelsea in the League Cup in December, our preparation was a few stretches, a relaxed jog then passing the ball to each other in pairs. Up the other end, Chelsea were practising in roughly groups of five, passing and moving and a bit of attacking play with the nets. Our preparation wouldn't look out of place before a Sunday League game.
