Spuds tonight

The ref on both legs was a complete joke. Whatever you think about us the facts are they got a dodgy pen in the 1st leg which clearly wasnt a pen and we should have had a pen tonight. Add to that the disgraceful play acting by Sevilla that both refs encouraged. They played far better then us 1st half but they were utter s**** 2nd half. In the 1st leg they didnt perform at all. We missed a lot of clear cut chances which was our major problem. Oh well still proud of the 2nd half display.

They're better than you lot. Stop crying.

showed more fight than we did tbf

They hung in there no more, their fate was always settled though, like that Irish bloke who gets his head put in a vice and his eye pops out in Casino, that's a good analogy I think.

not that I care much, but at the end of the day, the incorrect penalty decision by the ref has wrecked this tie

yet people still insist on no video replays

Wouldn't have been a video replay decision anyway. You'd have to stop the game for everything in that case.

no, only for penalties and red cards

What, not for the ball crossing/not crossing the line?

You can't stop the game and go to a fourth official everytime someone goes down in the box or appeals for holding on a corner.

I'm for video replays for incidents where it's not clear if the ball is in or not, but anything else would be impractical.

not penalty appeals but penalty decisions. and of course crossing the line

What's the difference between them? If someone appeals for a handball or a shirt tug unseen by the ref, does he have to go to his video man?

Penalties are often subjective anyway, one person's penalty is another person's dive. It needs to be a concrete decision for any video evidence to be brought in.

think you'll find FIFA have a rather more concrete definition to go by

Correct.

We'd have beaten them if we'd played at home second imo, that's the reason Boro got to the final and the reason Spurs managed to challenge Sevilla at all.

We had the run of Alkmaar at home and took our foot off the gas cos some dozy cunts thought 'job done'.

You didn't have Newcastle fans blaming the ref for the result though. In general, we accepted that Alkmaar had been the better team over the two legs.

Decisions? What, so you let the ref give it then overrule him?

yes...or affirm it

You don't think that undermines the referee's position just a little?

They get one wrong and the rest of the game there will be no confidence in the ref.

We were beaten by a technically better and far more organised team  - no complaints from me. (Only for Roeder and the gutless twats he picked).

Agree with Wullie about the Home/away thing though. We had them on the ropes and let them go. However, I dread to think what Alkmaar would have declared at had we gone their first.

Yeah, I've seen it, wasn't a penalty.

I'm not talking about this one incident, I'm talking about incidents that two people can have totally different views on, depending on your definition of contact (any time Andy Johnson goes to ground) and intent (particularly with handballs).

no. that happens already. why would reviewing decisions to give a penalty affect that? Ideally you would want to do both, but obvously with the attitude of modern players it would be unworkable

Stop being a complete clown. If you watched both our games you would see that the refs were a complete joke and that ultimately cost us at the end, no matter how good Sevilla played in the first half. Any NEUTRAL would agree.

I disagree, and I don't have that much of a dislike for Spurs to be honest, my missus and all her family are fans - I watched the game round there tonight. The ref was poor in both legs, but I think the fact they were a better team was what cost you. Any neutral could see that they took their foot off the pedal in the second half, and even then Robbo made two excellent saves.

You were beaten by an infinitely superior team, even if he'd have not given the pen over there you'd be out on away goals.  Pipe down and deal with your mediocrity.  First decent side you play and you're out.

Give over man, Sevilla were better.

Alkmaar were the first competent team NUFC played in the UEFA cup and we were undone, likewise with Spurs. Undone by opposistion technically very good and capable of scoring goals.

1. because he is a ref too. 2. because he has 10 cameras and unlimited rewinds / slo mo views

hardly going to be a regular occurance is it. If anything it might force even more clarification of the rules if qualified refs can't agree after both reviewing it. If you like, you could make it so that both refs should agree before an overule, that way the match official stays in overal charge

how? doesn't happen in any other sport. As said above, you can have the ref have the final say if he's overuled. Ref's make mistakes, who's honestly going to disagree with that?
