Guest
http://www.talkofthetyne.net/mediac/400_300/media/Parker~Wig.jpg bloody disgrace Good game this. Find a player who people don't particularly rate and find a photo of them celebrating a goal in the rain, and it automatically disproves any argument that says he wasn't that great. http://www.talkofthetyne.net/mediac/400_300/media/00~CORDONE.JPG
Guest Dr. Pongle
and was a bloody disgrace at NUFC. What a ridiculous thing to say. You obviously missed his first season with us and in his second season he faltered - mainly because he didn't know whether he was an attacking or defensive midfielder, and that was down to Roeder's lack of tactical nous. In a nutshell, Parker was a brilliant signing and I'm furious he was replaced with a total scumbag of a character in Joey Barton. I don't think anybody really knows whether Parker's an attacking or defensive midfielder. Personally I'm not sure he does either job well enough to justify playing ahead of a specialist, so have no problem with him leaving for West Ham for £7m. Although we probably could have got £22m the way they are chucking money at everyone in a desperate attempt to prove they are big time. He was superb as a defensive midfielder under Souness. Like Souness, Parker relished a tackle and Souness let Parker play to his strengths. Why Roeder tried to change this I don't know.
ohmelads
I was very happy when we signed Parker, but things just haven't turned out. When you watch him week in week out you quickly identify the faults in his game and I'm sure opponents did too. It seemed neither Souness nor Roeder knew how to use him. Off the ball he's a useful player, full of energy and always closing down, a real grafter and an excellent tackler. He seems far better defensively than he is going forward, but he has a couple of major weaknesses which you don't want to see in a DM. Firstly he wanders way too much. This happened far more when he got the captain's armband, because he tried to be everywhere and this left major gaps in midfield. He lacks discipline and if a side passes it in triangles he'll chase the ball and leave his position. His other major weakness is that with a ball at his feet he just doesn't know what to do. It's not that his technique or passing is poor, it's more that his decision making is terrible. He's not instinctive. He takes three, four or five touches and does that little pirouette looking for options. In the meantime any chance of a counter-attack has died and we have to try and pass our way through or, more frequently, he'll pass it back to someone like Bramble who'll lump it up the field and hope for the best. I think his best position would be the Makelele role in a 3-man central midfield. Here he could also have problems though because he dwells on the ball and likes a few touches to assess his options, whereas Makelele just keeps the ball moving and is ice cool under pressure. And that's not a position where you can wander either, Makelele again provides the perfect example of discipline. Parker has the qualities to be a decent, top 6 player. But he's too indecisive for a central midfielder and that'll always hold him back IMO.
Guest
Eriksson saw his faults which was why he never picked him, and got hammered for it by Newcastle fans.
Guest Dr. Pongle
Eriksson saw his faults which was why he never picked him, and got hammered for it by Newcastle fans. Plus the fact Lampard, Carrick, Gerrard and Hargreaves are all better midfielders than Parker.
Guest
He could easily have chosen him over Richardson & Jenas though but never did.

If your idea of a superb defensive midfielder is someone with zero technical ability, can't read the game, can't hold his position, slows down attacks and jumps into tackles like a fucking madman then yes he was superb. Even Jenas had more ability than Parker ffs.

Guest trotter58
Slowly but surely, a horrible realisation begins to descend on the Geordie nation... Copying Bolton Wanderers Is A Road To Disaster! By Nu Mad Monday 9th July 2007 Defender Steven Taylor says he wants to see Newcastle "hated" like Bolton Wanderers. But why the hell look to copy Bolton? They've won nothing since 1958! Ugly football doesn't win silverware anymore. The days of "Boring Boring Arsenal"; the long ball; and 0-0 draws are long gone. Football has moved on. Manchester United graced the Premier league last season with some breathtaking football, and Liverpool thrilled the nation as they flew the flag in Europe. And I find it staggering that Taylor would be happy to see us play like ... wait for it ... Bolton Wanderers! I'd rather go shopping with the wife on a Saturday than suffer that. We are the mighty NEWCASTLE UNITED ... a five times bigger club than Bolton Wanderers. Believe it! www.newcastleutd-mad.co.uk

TRon
Slowly but surely, a horrible realisation begins to descend on the Geordie nation... I think the horrible realisation will eventually dawn on deluded Bolton fans when little Sammy Lee steers Bolton back towards the trapdoor to the Championship...
