Don't know anything about Rozenhal, Beyes or Sagna. Would like to think that Sam has spotted more potential Haims wih these. Hyypia and Campbell could do a job if there is no fee involved, Wes Brown is always crocked.

that lad taiwo at marseilles looks like a very good player from the little i've seen of him

surely a lot depends on how much allardyce gets to play with?

i mean another person on another thread mentioned germans and i couldn't agree more...germans and argies are about the best defenders going, it's bred into them....

if we have enough money that's the way to go, mertsaeker (spelling?) stands out for me when i've seen him and before his injury metzelder was outstanding but i'm not to sure these days (?)

it's been mentioned elsewhere but for whatever reason expectations have gone wildly in the opposite direction to what i expected post shepherd selling - to me campbell, brown, shorey et al are not the answer....they were when we were patently skint but if we have enough money now to buy good age & quality then forget the likes of campbell

there's too much being made of us needing "experience", what we need is good players regardless of age and i think that'll take $$$$

look at roma with mexes and chivu, you don't hear them harping on about signing maldini do you?  (don't bother with the man u 7 goal bonanza, i know but it's an anomaly) good players is good players end of story...we've got one in taylor and all we need is another 1-2 CB's with different characters to him in order to keep him under wraps and protect his weaknesses

I heard that Baines interest has cooled because his club conceded a lot of goals from set pieces and Sam prefers full backs who are good in the air. I'm in 100% agreement. Give me a solid defender over a John Beresford-type any day of the week.

His shit clearences are a bigger problem, he must have got at least 10 assists last season for the other team.

I'd be happy with a few of them but top of my list would be:

Hoyte - Can play right-back, centre-back and left-back, very athletic, good in the air and just an all-round decent player who is at the right age. By all accounts he's a good lad too and in my opinion Wenger wouldn't block a move that guarantees him first team football as he isn't a first-team regular at Arsenal. I'd pay up to £5m for him which is a fair rate for a player of his versatility, talent and age I think, although I think £3m tops would probably get him.

Campbell - The two biggest issues that concerned me last season when we were linked with him were his frame of mind and his fitness, but he has since proving he still has what it takes and while he's coming towards the end of his career, I'm sure Big Sam could get a good few years out of him with his own specialist fitness methods as he has done with the likes of Speed. He would be a tremendous acquisition in every respect; leadership, experience, power and pace (he's still quicker than most) and above all else, organisational skills. I'd pay £2m for his services as I think he has 2 really good years left in him and what he could bring to the likes of Taylor just can't be bought.

Brown - An older, more experienced and more quality version of Hoyte in many respects who can play across that back-four. I've seen a lot of him the season just gone and he's hardly put a foot wrong, he's one of those defenders you hardly notice whatever position he plays and that's a good thing as he just goes about the business of defending in a calm and assured manner. His fitness hasn't been the greatest over the years but again, we shouldn't let those things worry us too much with Big Sam as our manager. I'd pay up to £5m for him as he'd be worth every penny and I also think we could get him from Man Utd who will need to recoup some of that massive outlay they've just spent if they want to bring in another quality forward.

Baines - He has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years and is impressing even more for the England under 21s. He would be a superb addition and has bags of potential yet is more than good enough already. Quick, good crosser, positionally he's decent and he has good attacking instincts. I'd pay up to £6m for him.

I'd get rid of Ramage, Carr and Babayaro, keep Taylor and promote Huntington and Edgar up in their place, those three along with the above would cover us at the back and give us much needed quality and experience, especially as we can also use Nobby, N'Zogbia and maybe even Dyer at full-back, although I'd like to see us peddle Dyer.

I haven't seen much of Baines but it worries me that no one is praising his defensive qualities. With the amount of goals we concede at set pieces and at the far post it's something that needs to be considered when buying new defenders.

Baines was excellent for the U 21s last night.

He was actually better defending than he was attacking but he still found time to bomb forward and cross for Nugent to score.

Something else that impressed me was his delivery from set pieces, caused the Italian all sorts of problems.
