This is the cunt who refused our appeal to replay the match against West Ham, with the backing of most PL clubs, in order to "protect the integrity of the league”. Makes you wonder.

He was spot on for that.

Definately. That was a joke on Spurs' part.

some club, straight after mascherano, should have done the same thing, quoting liverpools special circumstances, then another club, then another, then when the prem/fa says no,these are the rules, take the fuckers to court.

What did they do that was against the rules exactly?

the rule that a player cannot move twice in one season within the same country......yet he received "special dispensation"

Hamaan went from 'pool to Bolton to Man City in a couple of weeks over the summer.

Hamaan went from 'pool to Bolton to Man City in a couple of weeks over the summer.

Fifa granted dispensation for Mascherano to make the move at the start of the month, despite the fact he has already played for two clubs since 1 July last year - Corinthians and West Ham.

Under Fifa rules, a footballer cannot play competitively for more than two different clubs between 1 July and 30 June the following year.

However, dispensation was granted after Fifa took into consideration the fact that the South American and European seasons overlap.

from the beeb.

knew the rule was something along those lines.

Under those rules he wouldnt have been allowed to play for anybody since West Ham had released him and he'd already played for 2 clubs. Daft rule tbh

i believe the rule was brought in to stop clubs taking someone on a free then selling them a couple of months later to just make a profit.the clubs complained so it got wtaered down .

from fifa itself..........

Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has been given the green light by FIFA to join Liverpool from West Ham United.

Under FIFA rules governing the status and transfer of players, a footballer cannot play competitively for more than two clubs between 1 July and 30 June the following year, and Mascherano has already appeared for both Corinthians in Brazil and West Ham in England during that period.

FIFA have ruled, however, that the 22-year-old - who only completed two full matches for West Ham in a total of just seven appearances - was an exceptional case.

In a statement, football's world governing body explained their ruling was determined partly because the South American and European seasons overlap.

FIFA said: "The FIFA Single Judge took a decision on 29 January 2007, which subsequently was notified to the parties involved late yesterday, 30 January."

The Single Judge's ruling was that 'upon registration for Liverpool FC during the present registration period, the player Javier Mascherano is eligible to play in official matches with the said club with immediate effect.'

After careful study of the case put forward by the Anfield club, the conclusion was reached that it would not be justifiable to prevent Mascherano from moving to Merseyside during the current transfer window and being eligible to play in official matches.

Particular emphasis was given to the safeguarding of sporting integrity and the crucial element of overlapping seasons between the relevant associations.

The Single Judge made it clear, however, that such permission can only be granted under very strict preconditions. In particular, he stressed that, "a series of elements related, on the one hand, to the duration and the positioning of the relevant sports seasons as well as to the respect of the registration periods and, on the other hand, to the duration and respect of the employment contracts concerned, need to be cumulatively met."

so he was given special dispensation by fifa,ie allowed to break the rule.

It's a chicken and egg thing-the teams that were doing well when games started being on tv in asia were the ones on tv a lot. that was the asian fan's only method at the time to know what was going on in football in England. Therefore they became fans of those teams and wanted them to succeed, since that was what they saw. If someone random won, they knew nothing about them, and therefore could not care. It is very difficult to get someone to care about a team in a league thousands of miles away, when they have no connection to the city/country, know nothing about them, and rarely if ever see them on tv.  otherwise, it is just a faceless player wearing an abstract jersey. Meanwhile, the teams on tv were the ones they feel a connection to, they recognize the players and are pulling for them, since they have even learned a little more about them and their history. Why would a fan there pull for the underdog they know nothing about, since they can only be fans of the teams they are exposed to. This doesn't mean that you could never get Asian fans to care about the other teams, but it wouldn't be easy. The "other" teams would have to win enough to get on tv, and win long enough to become more than just a faceless statistic, so that fans there with no other connection can feel a part of the team. Its not winning teams they are inherently pulling for-its the teams they are exposed to regularly, who are all around them and on tv and in the news, who they can connect to, who they can attach a face to-in short, the big 4 for now.

The G14 clubs tend to get their own way. I doubt they'd have had the trouble that we had getting N'Zogbia from Le Havre for example. Could you imagine if ourselves or a smaller club had tried to sign Mascherano, do you think FIFA would have intervened and sidestepped the rules for us?
