Newcastle United's efforts to re-sign Nolberto Solano look set to end in failure. Not content with landing Michael Owen on deadline day, Magpies manager Graeme Souness had set his sights on Solano to add balance to his midfield. It had been suggested Aston Villa were prepared to strike a deal with Newcastle, provided they secured James Milner on loan in exchange, but The Magpies were only interested in a straight cash deal and this looks set to end any possibility of a transfer being agreed. "We made a bid, but it has been refused and that is the end of it," Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told Sky Sports News. "We wish Nobby and Aston Villa all the best." With time still left before the window slams shut until January, Shepherd added there could still be a chance of talks reopening. "You never know," he added. "I said I loved my wife when I left this morning, so who knows?" Villa's desire to secure Milner's services on loan would appear to be a sticking point and Shepherd insisted the youngster would not be heading out of St James' Park. "Not a chance," said Shepherd in response to questions about whether Milner could be used as a makeweight in the deal. Meanwhile, Villa keeper Wayne Henderson has had his loan spell at Brighton extended by a further two months - keeping him on the South Coast until November 1. http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=303013&CPID=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Toon+snubbed+in+Nobby+bid&channel=

What about this summer when Roeder was 100% adament that Milner wasn't going to Villa, today he is talks or last season when Shepherd was adament that Milner would not go to Villa on Loan
-
Sounds suspiciously like Luque. Who should really also excel in Europe. Although he would bring alot more to the table in terms of strength, physical prescence and holding the ball up. Viduka can score goals in Europe for English teams though
-
we can't get Bridge until this LB situation at Chelsea is sorted out.
-
I would discount Luque, he doesn't want to play, Roeder doesn't want him to play, we don't want him to play. Duff or Dyer upfront is not how Roeder would play it. He'd make it 4-5-1
-
So we can have strikers. Luque is crap and I would rather he does not play, Owen is f***ed for the season and Ameobi is always struggling for fitness which leaves us with Martins and Rossi with possibly Ameobi. Three strikers would leave us playing 4-5-1 sometimes. Wth Viduka we'll have four strikers and we'll play 4-4-2 more times, including in Europe. If we don't sign another striker, we'll be left with just Ameobi and Martins as our forwards for European games.
-
I'd take no one. We've got four strikers that are sufficient unti January. Use the Milner money to buy defender(s). We've got two crocks and a crap player who doesn't want to even be here leaving us with a new player unproven in the league and a youngster who will only be here for 4 months. Yes we need defenders but if you don't score goals, you don't win matches.
-
Since it's a choice between Viduka and no one I think I'd take Viduka right now
-
We need another striker with Owen out, Ameobi unfit and Luque crap.

Viduka in but Milner to go? By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle Newcastle United are hoping to tie up the signing of Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka before tonight's transfer deadline. And the Chronicle can reveal that Aston Villa have come in with a late £5m bid for James Milner who was on loan at Villa Park last season. When Milner reported for training today he fully expected to be told to head back down to the Midlands where he had such a successful loan spell at Villa Park last season. But reports linking United with Juventus striker David Trezequet were wide of the mark, as were claims that Roeder only turned to Giuseppe Rossi because he failed to get Viduka from Middlesbrough. The lines between Tyneside and Teesside were red hot today as United tried to get Viduka on what would be a permanent transfer. I understand the Australian international would jump at the chance to come to St James' Park and that United were reasonably confident of getting him. But Roeder was more than confident of signing the player who has been his top defensive target throughout the summer, Robert Huth, only to lose out to Middlesbrough for the German international right at the death. As far as defenders are concerned, United would have been interested in Lucas Neill, but the versatile Blackburn defender has his eye on a switch across Lancashire to Liverpool. And as far as Milner is concerned, Villa's move came out of the blue and gave Freddy Shepherd plenty to think about. United have already seen Alan Shearer retire, Michael Owen pick up a knee injury which will keep him out for the rest of the season and Michael Chopra, Lee Bowyer, Amady Faye and Jean Alain Boumsong all go out of the St James' Park door - and in an ideal world they would not want to lose another one. But £5m for a 20-year-old player who has yet to win a regular spot at St James' Park and who only cost £3.5m is a lot of money. On the other hand United would be hoping to snap up Viduka for around £2m especially as the 30-year-old Melbourne-born striker only has 12 months of his contract to run.

I still think we'll sign Viduka. They reported this: http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=303013&CPID=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Toon+snubbed+in+Nobby+bid&channel= and then two hours later we signed Solano
-
If we got Huth and two strikers, I'd be satisfied. Would rather have Bridge as well like. Whatever happens we need a signing today
-
Boro would never sell. Then again they need the money to pay for Woodgate's wages
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THEY'RE GOING TO WIN THE LEAGUE! bluecry.gif
-
West Brom beat Sunderland to the signing of Phillips and then put him on the bench for today's game
-
On SSN - "Roy Keane's more used to winning the Premiership rather than just trying to get into it"

All I can say on this matter is...
