I get where you're coming from, but think about how the Swedes must be looking at this world cup now over if they were in the other side of the pot. Arguably the worse side on this side and they'll rightfully be thinking they have a genuinely decent chance of making the final. Imagine it's Newcastle, and you get a choice between a route consisting of these teams to reach a final: Route 1: Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Leicester, Arsenal & Wolverhampton Route 2: Swansea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Brentford, Fulham, Derby & Liverpool "I'd rather we got in Route 1" my ass. Brentford won 2-0 at the weekend so I'll take my chances with Chelsea thanks very much.

Ironic too considering it's that kind of "we can beat anyone" arrogance that has seen Sixx's country massively overachieve Remember when Leicester arrogantly won the Premiership? I'd say Croatia and England are probably of fairly similar standard, if we played each other several times, we'd win some, they'd win some, they've got a couple of world class players, so have we, well certainly one at least. FWIW, they've got a FIFA ranking of 20 (England's is 12) and they needed a play off to qualify having finished behind Iceland. Imagine Newcastle drawing a team of similar level in a cup competition, someone on here saying "I don't think we've got anything to fear from Bournemouth/Palace/Watford" and a fan of another club coming on and saying what incredible arrogance that showed. It's so weird.

Seemed like a perfectly reasonable post to me. In what way does that show an unbelievable mentality? These accusations of arrogance seem to be a weird quirk of international football.

Put money on both Perisic and Mandzukic FGS 2 minutes before kick off, FML.

It was Group G who knew the makeup of the draw.

Even extra time doesn't count, never mind penalties.

Fuck me, what a goal.

Messi as a lone striker?
-
Haven't seen much of him in the last couple of years but was a big fan of his a few seasons ago. He completely embarrassed our midfield in one of the derbies under Pardew.

Well is it coming home or isn't it?

If Mexico put Brazil out btw, we're going to look like right daft cunts.

Probably because Japan are the far easier draw for the next round but everyone’s talking about a favourable QF draw like we’ll stroll past Colombia. That's a perfectly fair point and I think the point was rendered a little moot by Colombia being next for second place. But I do think the route to the final is much simpler as it stands - that's not the same as thinking it's a done deal.
-
I hope this wasn't deliberate.

How is wanting a loss going to be good for the moral of the squad of a young team? They're highly paid professional footballers, not the under 11s. I'm sure Marcus Rashford will get over this defeat in a dead rubber.
-
Don't think anyone believes it will be easy. Is James going to be injured?
-
How is it arrogant to want an easier draw? Don't get that at all. It's literally no different at all to wanting an easier draw in any cup competition.
-
Fellaini tried for an even more blatant yellow just before the first. Didn't get it mainly because I've got money on him.

Surely Japan is preferable to Colombia? Not what I mean. I've seen a lot of talk like we should just throw the game, as if we're that damn good. We're not. Don't get me wrong, we might well be coming into a new phase of development and getting better, but a 6-1 defeat of Panama should not be prompting wild assumptions of class. You know Belgium have put a second string out and their manager has said the priority is not to win? Well, no, I don't, but that's not really what I'm talking about. I'm not after some heavy discussion either, just find this attitude that we're even in the position to choose whether we win or lose quite fanciful. Well it's not fanciful if the other team is trying to chuck the game. It's a question of do we let them or do we try and do the same. I think it's fairly moot now that Colombia are next for the second place, it's become much more tricky.
