  1. Personally I think the rules need to evolve as the game does. The offside rule was altered in the 20s when a certain NUFC exploited the old rule to good effect. Personally I think there are too many cynical fouls as the punishment is not severe enough (although a pen and red card goes the other way). I like the ice hockey rules where every foul gets a sin bin time (2 mins) and more serious fouls (yellow card equivalent) get 5 mins. In football the times would need to be longer to reflect the increased size of the pitch, number of players and length of game. I'd also like to see games last a fixed length with clocks switched off either like Rugby or running only when the ball is in play (70 min games?). I'd also like to see the use of a long range penalty (25m?) for any yellow card offence; more excitement and I bet soon less fouls. Finally I'd like to use video to re-referee games; not to change the outcome but to punish clubs whose players dive, hold shirts etc etc. You could have an escalation like a warning after so many offences, then a fine and then points docked. Make the onus on the clubs to manage their employees.

  2. Re the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer incident I think it was clearly 'bringing the game into disrepute' and as per obvious cases of diving and shirt pulling should be reviewed after the game with clubs going on an esculated fine of money then points for misbehaviour of its players. The clubs would soon reign in poor behaviour.

  3. Do you think Taylor and Colly were rested deliberatly to show how weak we are in centre defence? Just seemed strange to rest those two and play two kids in CD who usually play full back. Throw in a young keeper and we had a disaster waiting to happen (x3).

I thought the game also showed that Ranger, LuaLua, Kadar and Krul have a little way to go to make the first team. Introducing them one at a time may be more effective. I was impressed with Simpson even though he is too small to be a CB. Well timed tackles and organising from the lad.

I thought Enrique was again our best player - just hope he stays. I also thought Shola made a difference and you could sense the confidence he has right now.

Whatever the opposition it was good to come back from 3-1.

  4. Reckon we need to give youth a chance in general and that means Krul will get my vote - not that it counts for anything. The thing I like about him is his size - if you were to design a keeper from scratch you'd want someone his height and with his reach that is still athletic enough to get down. I thought he tried his best to dominate the box to help the defence (unlike Harps or Shay). Of course as a young keeper he is bound to make mistakes but I'd back him to come good.

  5. Terrible news. Agree with BobYule that it means that Ashley couldn't afford Shearer's plans and can't afford to dump Shearer. Whatever the truth of the overdraft we are in for a Summer of fire sales where we'll lose Taylor and Bassong cheaply and manage to keep Duff and Geremi. The sale of the club will spill into next season so we'll start the campaign with a temporary manager and the club in turmoil. The only plus I can see is that the sale of the JJB shares indicates Ashley is doing something to prevent a total meltdown.

Hard to see where the £40m overdraft comes from given the profits we've made in the last two transfer windows and the fact that we don't have interest payments on the stadium now.

Next season a virtual disaster already!
