I’m not saying that he’s not worth signing. People have posted his PL goals and assists record vs his peers. His is as good or better. You could interpret that, as he is as good as them or better. When you take his overall game, I don’t think he is.

On that i think we can agree.  Ultimately what we are lacking from our wide forwards is goals and assists - i think Barnes could add both.  Ultimately we are still fishing in a different pond from Man City, Arsenal et al

Well some people are implying that he is because they think the only reason others weren’t interested is because they already have a player of that calibre.

Doubts they could do it in the PL. If Bruno played for Leicester he would be sold for more than Maddison.

The point I’m trying to make is that Barnes does compare well to some of the best wingers or attacking midfielders  in the league when you just look at goals. You can add Mount, Richarlison, Raphinha, JM to that. He’s going for less money than them all, with a good contract position. He’s also had less international recognition. Why is that?

    - more 1 dimensional style of play

    - average all round game and wider influence

    - less effective against a low block

    - positionally/tactically inflexible

    - doubts about him off the ball

And these are the same reasons some are sceptical of the transfer. He’s an average football player but a good goalscorer.

i think he starts for us and could score a lot of goals and be a massive success for us. But there’s valid reasons for ppl being sceptical - he’s not a great footballer.

There's an element of that of course, but also other teams have a different vision for what sort of player will work in their team.  To say a player isnt worth signing because another team doesnt want him is to take a very basic view of football at this level

If hes implying all Spanish players are pricks then yes it is

I think implying that tactical fouls to break up play has been a common theme in recent years in Spanish football is a racist comment is a bit of a stretch personally

Barnes has comparable ‘stats’ to Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, Rashford etc.

Why do we think other top 6 clubs aren’t in for him at £35m?

Why weren't any of the top six in for Bruno, Isak or Botman?

  5. It seems thay we are targeting players on relatively low wages - Barnes rather than Maddison, Tonali rather than Barella etc.  IMO its a sensible tactic - the alternative is you quickly end up like man utd or chelsea where everyone that signs expects 200k+ a week.  Building slowly and deliberatley isnt just about transfer fees

  6. Considering a striker getting into double figures in a relegated team is always seen as having had a good season, i would say 13 from the wing is pretty remarkable.

Liverpool seem pretty well stocked in that area with Salah and now Szoboszlai. They need to strengthen other areas too

And surely Chelsea dont need another wide forward?!

This comes up from time to time and yet I've never read anything on FFP that indicates the payment terms (e.g. paid up front vs. in installments) has any bearing on how it would be calculated. You can still amortize the fee over the length of the contract.

The only thing I can think of here is we did not want / could not afford to have a purchase hit our 2022/23 accounting year.

All i can think is that maybe clauses such as extra money fir European qualification, numer of appearances, goals etc aren't counted against  until they are activated, but they also cant be used to force a release clause in a contract

Aye. And the 32 year old started 43 games last season.  All 38 league games and 5 cup matches.

Tino isn’t going to accept FA Cup and league cup + starting 5 league games and coming off the bench. And I don’t blame him.

We could promise him more game time at RB. But Howe hasn’t struck me as a ‘rotate for the sake of it’ manager unless there’s fitness or injury record concerns.

How much of that has been not having genuine options to freshen up team though?  It is generaly accepted that Tonali is the longstaff upgrade, and i imagine Longstaff will still get plenty of game time

I can’t blame him for not wanting to come if it’s true he wants guaranteed playing time. He’s not going to overtake Trippier in the pecking order this season barring a (god forbid) long term injury.

True enough, but to be second choice for a team playing a lot of matches in the league and Europe he is going to get a lot of game time - there are very few players who start every game.
