Newcastle stars like Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan will be asked to take a pay CUT if the Magpies win promotion to the Premier League.
Whilst most players look forward to a raise in their wages on going up to the promised land, Newcastle’s players are being told they face cutbacks.
Smith and Nolan, along with Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini, are all still on big money from the contracts handed to them during Newcastle’s big spending Premier League days.
But with owner Mike Ashley forced to pump another £10million into the club just to get them through the season, the players are being forced to accept the gravy train has come to a halt.
Ashley is fed up with paying out £40m a year in wages and Newcastle are instead dangling the carrot of extended deals for their big earners, but with the players picking up less money per year.
Smith and Nolan would see an extra year added to their current contract, but their wages would be spread out over the length of the deal.
The move could see an exodus of Newcastle’s big name players, although there are several key men open to negotiations.
Ashley has already set to work in tackling a ludicrous culture of spending at St James’ Park that saw big guns earning around £240,000 a month.
He put a £10,000 a week limit on wages for new signings in January after it was revealed Newcastle are losing £500,000 per week.
Now Ashley is desperate for the Championship leaders to land a spot in the Premier League and inherit a £35m cash windfall.
That would allow him to repay the personal loans he has made to the club before looking for a buyer to take the Magpies off his hands.
Have to say this is Ashley at his motivational best, how could this possibly back fire on him

It was probably The Sun or News of the World bugging the place. The media in this country go into overdrive to ruin Englands chances on World Cup years.
Zero evidence that this is the case here. It seems to have been a member of the public who hoped to able to sell the recording.
I think I agree with JJ7, they do seem to find a story which damages England's morale etc in the run up to every competition. However, could just as easily blame the public for buying the newspapers and therefore encouraging it.

Slightly surprised how many votes Scholes has got, exceptional player but always thought Beckham and Gerrard were held in higher esteem.
If you could only have one player to add to your team it would have to be gerrard for me, he's carried liverpool single handedly at times which I don't think any of the other players are capable of as it is not their style of play.

Its a game I wouldnt have made it to so happy it's on tv but its a disgrace to treat away fans like this. NUFC.com is reporting that "We understand that strong protests were made by Newcastle to both the Football League and Sky over the rescheduling of this game, but fell on deaf ears."
So a rare occasion where the club is looking out for the fans.

We all know he's a little shit but on his day he's an excellent player and would walk into nearly all the teams in the Premiership. It does sounds like he has a point here if he thought the coach was risking him getting injured though.
Someone mentioned that some managers will put up with players like this and others, such as Souness won't. I can't find them now but I'm sure there's some quotes from Bobby about having to manage personalities like Romario when they bring something special to the team. Having to choose between the Robson and Souness schools of management doesn't seem a very difficult choice to me.

Eidur Gudjohnnsen wants to leave Monaco in January to come to England.
Not that he'd come here, or that we'd go after him. Just thought I'd mention it.
Sure I read somewhere that his gambling problem is back and worse than ever, perhaps Monaco was not the most sensible place to move for someone with his issues

Can the Given haters - or the few who are old enough - tell me if they feel the same way towards Peter Beardsley (who left us right in the s**te when he went to Liverpool)?
Like Given, Beardsley left because he wanted to. He was offered better money and went to a club he thought was better than Newcastle. Thats what professional footballers tend to do.
Ironically the player who really did not want to leave but was to some extent pushed out was Chris Waddle, and yet he seemed to face more animosity after his departure being called Judas etc.

Kazenga, who struggles even in the reserves from what i've heard.

Elaborate pleae.
Went to watch the reserves against Leeds the other night and Kazenga coming on changed the game for us. He was by far our best player, always looking to take the ball and get things moving. He was playing through the centre though.

The reserves are playing Leeds at Bootham Crescent tonight (or KitKat Crescent for those who believe in ground sponsorship). Ranger, Lua Lua, Donaldson and Tozer are all in the squad.

Yes in total agreement, really can't see us buying anyone. If we do we'll only be buying a player for a million for every 3 or 4 million we generate through selling them.
I'm just more shocked that he seems to suggest that he won't be buying players at the moment but might in January, not sure the guy has any understanding of anything

- So at the moment they won't be buying any players outright, but in January they will, guess this might have something to do with the fact that there are transfer windows

Well given the article apparently Ashley is pouring another £16 million in to the club a year than he has been telling us, the man's philanthropy knows no bounds.

Would not be surprised if we bought campbell in so Ashley can flog Collocini off for a few million quid. I'm expecting a net profit as usual in January.

Agree nearly entirely with you. Don't think he is pretending to sell the club as a ruse to not do transfers though, that's just an added benefit when he fails to sell as he has an excuse. He has repeatedly over valued the club and can't see it being any different this time. The club must be worth more to someone else than to him as many supporters are still very angry (although I am slightly concerned by the apathy many fans have begun to show, and even more by the number who now praise him) which would seem to suggest that a price could be agreed on but I think he is just too greedy and will demand more than it is worth to a liked owner anyway.
