  1. Newcastle Have Unearthed The New Makélelé

    http://www.footballtransfertavern.com/2010/11/premiership/newcastle-have-unearthed-the-new-makelele

Whilst Chelsea have paid €22 million for Ramires to come and attempt to fill the endless void left by Claude Makélelé in 2008, Chris Hughton has unearthed the nearest thing I have ever seen to the Frenchman, who was so good at the defensive midfield position the British press actually named the position after him.

Cheick Tioté may not be a household name throughout the Premiership just yet but after his impressive debut against Everton in September 2010, the Ivory Coast lynchpin as gone onto be ever present this season. His style of play and no nonsense tackling have already earned rave reviews on MOTD with Alan Hansen. He is a Rolls Royce of a midfielder who is as comfortable in possession as he is in trying to regain it.

Tioté, 24, arrived on our shores from FC Twente where he helped the un-fancied club secure the 2010 Eredivisie title (the clubs first in its 45 year history). He appeared 58 times for Steve McLaren’s champions over a 2 year period in Holland. His assurance and ball winning ability were key features in the reds success.

Newcastle did well to secure the signing of Tioté who, after a very impressive World Cup in South Africa was heavily linked with Everton and West Brom. The young midfielder is more impressively built than Makélelé in terms of height which makes him more of an aerial threat but it’s on the deck where the Ivorian really comes to the fore. His performance in the 1 nil win away at Arsenal was one of the stand out performances of the season.

His ability to win the ball and dispatch it with ease to the more forward thinking players in the Magpies team means that defence turns to attack in the blink of an eye. Obviously he has a long way to go until he can truly be compared to Makélelé simply because of the Frenchman’s longevity at the top of the European game. I for one would be very surprised though if the Ivorian powerhouse was still in the black and white of Newcastle after the summer.

  2. The Satan De Jong not selected again for Netherland's match against Turkey, apparently because he has not shown remorse over his style of play. Bravo Van Marwijk  :clap2:

Nigel de Jong has been left out of the Holland squad as punishment for not showing contrition for the challenge that left Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa with a double break to his leg. De Jong's refusal to accept he was to blame for Ben Arfa's injury, or that he needs to alter his style, has led to Bert van Marwijk, the Holland manager, announcing that the midfielder will play no part in their game against Turkey on 17 November.

Van Marwijk dropped De Jong from the European Championship qualifiers against Sweden and Moldova last month because he felt the Manchester City player had committed a "wild and unnecessary offence" during the 2-1 defeat of Newcastle United. He spoke at the time of De Jong playing with a combative style where he "needlessly looks to push the limit" and he had hoped that the player would express regret when they next talked and, specifically, agree that he needs to curb his combative instincts.

Instead De Jong told Van Marwijk during a meeting in Manchester yesterday that he feels he has been unfairly treated and has considered whether he could play for the team again under the current management. His belief is that Van Marwijk has used him to help deflect the criticism that was directed at the Dutch management for the team's abrasive style of play in the World Cup.

Newcastle registered an official complaint with the Football Association over De Jong's challenge on Ben Arfa, but the midfielder believes it was wrong for the Dutch to take action against something that happened while he was playing for his club in England.

His club have vigorously supported him in the face of vehement criticism, which the City manager, Roberto Mancini, believes has affected the player's form. De Jong's critics have cited the fact he broke the leg of the Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden during a friendly international this year against the USA and was culpable of the now-infamous challenge in the World Cup final that saw him plant his studs into the chest of the Spanish player Xabi Alonso.

He said a few weeks ago that de Jong wouldn't be in the NT before 2011...
