You're talking out of your *rse mate, Roeder has got everything needed to make him a top manager (apart from the final badge, so I'm not taking the rumour as gospel yet). Here's what I first said over a month ago, I stick by it and I still reckon you've got yourself a winner this time around. "Although I have met GR, it's never been close enough of long enough to honestly form an opinion of the guy although 'sour incompetent and no leader of men', sour yes, the other two no. I've met him on 3 occasions, once to talk to for about 5/10 minutes, plus a couple of fleeting 'hello, well played'. Also overheard him when he was the West Ham youth coach in matches against the Spurs kids. He struck me as very ambitious, very positive and very perceptive, going on to the spanners kids about shortcomings in the Spurs kids that I hadn't really been aware of but when he said it, you could see what he meant. Always seemed to be a great motivator, getting more out of some than was really there, it was easy to see why man management is thought to be one of his strengths. Most of what I knew about him came from Glenn Hoddle, who I know well. Hoddle wanted Roeder on the coaching staff when he went to Spurs in addition to Hughton, and it was Hoddle that appointed him to the England coaching setup when he was manager, at that time Roeder was still the West Ham youth coach. Hoddle will talk to anyone for hours on end about tactics and training methods and was obviously well impressed with Roeder's thinking. The fact that Roeder held a low profile job wouldn't have made any difference, Hoddle appointed Peter Taylor to be the u21 coach when Taylor was manager of Dover Athletic. Hoddle told me that Roeder was one of the strongest minded and ambitious people he knew in football, maybe that surprised me a bit because he doesn't strike me as having that sort of mentality, very knowledgeable and perceptive undoubtedly, but not strongminded, not in the Fergie style anyway. When you remember that Hoddle is really thick with Wenger, his comments about Roeder are a big compliment. Reading between the lines, I think Hoddle rates Roeder higher than Taylor from the coaching perspective, even though Taylor got the higher profile job, I may be wrong, but I don't think so. There's no doubt he was unlucky at West Ham having both Di Canio and Kanoute out for 6 months, losing your 2 best strikers and not being given money to replace them would hurt any team. Terry Brown, the spanners chairman, is tighter with his money than Doug Ellis and when they got hit with injuries, and no money to get replacments in, they went down. I never saw that as relegation brought on by Roeder, simply self inflicted by Brown. The one area of management he's never really been tested on in signing new players, but I would guess with his ability to identify strengths and weaknesses in players, I don't think that would be a problem. Quite frankly, I think that is a ridiculous argument. Spurs haven't beaten Liverpool, manure or Chelsea either, does that mean Martin Jol can't give Spurs a chance of competing with the best? Of course it doesn't, nor can that argument be levelled at Glenn Roeder either. What makes you think he hasn't got the attributes to get Newcastle to the CL? He got the spanners to 7th in the premiership with practically no transfer money at all. One thing is for certain. If he doesn't get the top job, there will be plenty of clubs who have seen what he can do and will. I don't think you will see Roeder back in the Academy, time for something better, either at Newcastle or elsewhere. He also took the same, very talented, team down the next season. Speaking to my WHam mate recently I commented on what a good job Roeder has done for us - he said the same thing of their first non-full season with him. The next season, according to him, they were dreadful. I believe Roeder has done exceptionally well for us as caretaker manager, but that's all it should be in my opinion. I'll grant that the West Ham support isn't the most fair-minded in the world, but most of them don't seem to have a high opinion of Roeder, in my experience. I don't have as many spanners mates as most other London clubs, but the people I know from whichever club generally thought he was doing a pretty good job for a newbie given the restrictions placed on him by the Chairman. If Brown thought Roeder was the man for the job, he should have given Roeder finance to get in replacements when the injuries struck. To tell him that you can't have any money because you haven't proved yourself, even though Brown had appointed Roeder on a permanent basis was imo lunacy. I'm not saying that Roeder is the best man for the job, but I honestly think he could do a lot better with the right support from the board than a lot of the names being bandied about. I think you'll find those who said give Souness more time are the ones saying "Give the job to Roeder" I personally rate Roeder as far FAR better than Allardyce Curbishly et al, but want Hitzfeld or Hiddink. I dont want to be getting angry and demanding Roeder's head when it goes pear shaped because he's too nice a bloke, and has our clubs best interests at heart (unlike Souness who subsidised Rangers with our money on Boumsong, and is responsible for Faye and Babayaro) I'm certainly not one of those who thought Souness should have more time, I wanted him out in November!! The reasoning behind that was because I wanted the new man, when he was appointed, to have adequate time to look at the squad, see what improvements were needed and deal with it in the January window. With the season as it now is, I see no benefit in not keeping Roeder until the end of the season (badge permitting) and for FFS to decide shortly after who is the right nam for the job. I don't see any benefit in appointing a new man now, equally, I can see no good reason for leaving it in abeyance until after the WC. The decision should have been made before the WC starts.

Ouch you reckon we're gonna get 1 point. With a 0-0 on Saturday? Seems realistic mind. If you can see where any more are coming from, I'm open to suggestions. The spanners are doing ok, I thought about Charlton but I wondered how the team morale would be by then if Souness was still in charge. A lot could change if he went.

I expect Newcastle to perform a lot better too when Owen returns, a more important injury IMO was Taylor's. When he was playing the centre of defence looked a lot more secure than it does now. Wigan reserves had something 21/22 shots at goal and a dozen on target. I'm damned convinced that wouldn't have been the case if Taylor had been playing.

TBH Obi, at the start of the season I thought the top 6 would be Manure, Chelsea, Scum, Scousers Spurs and Newcastle (in no particular order). I hope I'm wrong but I don't think Newcastle will get anywhere near threatening for a top 6 spot right now. In a previous thread, I said for the 8 matches from Chelsea to the end of the year you'd get 12 pts. You got 3 against Brum but, right now, I can't see Newcastle picking up another win. Without Owen you're struggling to score, Villa will be fighting just as much as you, I reckon that will be goalless. The rest I think you'll lose.

Let's all just keep calm, wait until the New Year and see what the League table looks like then.
