Aye that's right, less pressure on him to score in half an hour in front of 48,000 people most of whom need no further reason to hate him. More pressure in front of 2 or 3 thousand of our lot in Italy in a game we probably go into as underdogs tbh. Not the point. You're missing it. I'm talking about Roeder's comments "ball is in his court now, must show what he can do to stay in the team" etc.... Why make these comments? Just let him ****ing play is all i'm saying. I'm no defender of Luque, but I also think Roeder is a fool, and is failing miserably in dealing with underperforming players.[/b] Some of those replying to my post are only interested in continuously pointing out how shit an expensive Spanish import is, and that THEY can see it, but the "kids" can't etc.. etc.. were you around when Gordon fucked McKeag etc.. etc.. I'm only interested in our manager trying to win every game possible for this club. Nowt more, nowt less. Luque should have been given a chance, and a PROPER chance (like the countless chances Bramble, Dyer, Ameobi et al) have had under all the different managers. Word

Pizzas started out in Naples (so I believe).

Now that the squad is now known, any predictions on the score? I say 4-0 help.gif

good point. we got more in initial rewards than spurs because we had a better manager than they do now. but their policy has been more of a financial success, probably because of the backroom setup at spurs. where as we bought Ambrose, their scouting network managed to pick up aaron lennon, their DofF went for his first-choice player - michael carrick, while our chairman decided to go for a cheaper option in Nicky Butt. by far and away the best of our bunch now plays for Liverpool, while one of our only financial successes was Jenas - now spurs have him! Wouldn't argue with any of that, I'm not going to start claiming that MJ is on a par with SBR because he ain't! But in Comolli we have the extra person to keep the impetus going and SBR didn't have anyone like him and Newcastle haven't even got close to appointing with his depth of knowledge. Two articles from yesterday highlight the direction that Spurs are taking under Comolli's guidance: http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=425702&CPID=8&clid=6&lid=2&title=Spurs+ Tottenham's sporting director Damien Comolli has assured fans that the club will never follow Arsenal's example of building a side around foreign players. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has named very few English players in the majority of his teams over the past few seasons, and at times there has not even been a single British player in the Arsenal starting XI. However, Comolli has insisted that Martin Jol has no intention of steering Tottenham in the same direction, stressing that there will always be a core of home-grown players at White Hart Lane. "We will never do what Arsenal have done," he stressed. "When I discussed with the board last year about coming they told me that the club's philosophy was built on English players and I agreed with them. "What we have been trying to do has not changed. We always try to sign British players, the second option is foreign players within the Premiership and the third is looking abroad. "But we won't say we won't buy someone because they are foreign as we need to bring in quality players. "Martin (Jol) is right about having an English core. We lost only Michael Carrick in the summer (to Manchester United) but Tom Huddlestone is getting more involved this year as a result. "Our policy now is to sign the right players. We are looking for top quality so the quantity will be less." Tottenham were linked with Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing in the summer and some supporters have questioned why they did not manage to sign a left winger. But Comolli said: "They have wondered why we haven't signed a left-winger but they are difficult to find. Of the teams who reached the last 16 of the World Cup there was only one left-winger. "It is not something we should concentrate on. We have enough quality to compensate. It's not so much of a problem and they should not worry." http://www.all3points.co.uk/cat/spurs/str011106.php Spurs beat Europe's biggest to sign striker 1st November 2006 By Staff Writer Tottenham Hotspur have pulled off a major coup in snapping up one of Europe's brightest young prospects from right under the noses of some of Europe's biggest clubs. Spurs have signed 17 year old Norwegian striker Alexander Olsen from Norwegian Third Division club SK Gjovik Lyn. Gjovik chairman Arve Hansen confirmed to Eurosport that the deal had been done and that Spurs had beaten off interest from Chelsea and Barcelona with the transfer fee at around £80,000: "The deal was done on Saturday, We received a fax from Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well." So far there has been no official confirmation of the signing from the club but it is presumed Olsen will join up with his new team in January. With Olsen's signing (I mentioned that here a week or so ago), there are add-ons which could take the fee up to nearly £1.5m and if Spurs do pay hat much he will have been worth it. If he flops, we've lost £80k, the same as Dyer's wages for a week. It's not exactly rocket science to think Spurs are on the right track. Maybe it will sink in with FFS sometime.

Have you ever thought of a career in sport? Chairman of Newcastle for example? :winking: Whilst it can be of some benefit to see what went wrong in the past, I prefer to look forward with regard to what should be done now to take Newcastle forward. What you've said can't be faulted imho, especially the belief that steady progression will undoubtedly bring more likelihood of success than hoping to win trophies immediately.

Was playing for their reserves against the Spurs youngsters last night and was one of the worst players on the pitch by all accounts.

In depth? Apart from experience he's got the ****ing lot mate. Obviously I'm biased but I think he is amonst the best youngsters in world football - right up there alongside the likes of Fabregas and Messi. I just can't see anything that makes me think "If he could do _____ then he'd be great..." Quality youngster even if 'he is amonst the best youngsters in world football' is going over the top a bit. Spurs bid £5m for him in the summer and got turned down, but he is diehard gooner and only wants to move to the scum. That's where I expect him to be within 2 years. Unless Chelsea buy him for the sake of not letting anyone else have him again... You know Henry sent him a signed shirt congratulating him on his progress a little while back. Not that they meant to tap him or anything, its only those naughty boys at Chelsea who do that. PS: I'm biased, we just won, I'm in a good mood re: City, obviously I'm going over the top bluebiggrin.gif Tried hard to lose it but 3 points all the same. At least Henry sent Richards an Henry shirt. Fergie sent Gary Neville a manu shirt with Carrick's name on it which was given to him during the WC!! Another act generosity rather than any hint of tapping though. :winking: i would hazard a guess that you want those two names switched around its really annoying seeing all these clubs have players like micah coming through, when ours have been distinctly average so far. although krul, taylor and zog look good mind, with OB and matty close behind. No, don't want to change the names but maybe speak plainer English this time! Fergie had a shirt made up with Carrick's name and number on it. This Fergie sent to Gary Neville at the WC Camp so that Neville could present it to Carrick. The transfer went through nearly 2 months later. Krul, Taylor and Zoggy make 3 good youngsters come through for minimal cost (whatever Zoggy cost). Half the premiership teams would be happy with that result.

.......... or scumball on a freebie. Didn't you say your 'ITK' info was that Campbell wanted a £5 million signing on fee? :? http://www.newcastle-online.com/nufcforum/index.php/topic,26743.msg501744.html#msg501744 BTW its nice to have you posting on the forum as much as you used to, your posts were few and far between earlier in the season (coincidentally, it was when Spurs were going through a bad patch) but now you're back in full swing. Funny that... Signing on fees are generally accepted as wages and wouldn't therefore come out of any transfer kitty. Even if there had been a transfer fee of £5m he still would have been a far better signing than Duff for the same money. Thanks for your good wishes :winking:, the 'bad patch' coincided with our first 3 away games of Bolton, Manu and Liverpool. No points earned but few fans were amazed by that return. Spurs are currently 4 points down on the results against the same teams last season (Watford = Sunderland) so I'm not unduly excited or worried by the season so far.

No chance of getting Gera at the price you're suggesting, more like £4m as Fulham offered £2.5m and got turned down. Also, keep Milner for the squad. Not the greatest but could be a lot better under a different manager.

Streets ahead of Duberry in quality even if he does need a good polishing to be the finished article. Reminds me a lot of scumball as a teenager, playing the same positions too (but not striker) with pretty similar ball skills as well. So I opt for centre of the back 4 to be his final position and he'll make a good job of it too.

  Lack of goals can still produce a point. Lack of a defence produces rock all. Both areas need overhaul, quickly and thoroughly.

2nd November - Palermo (a) LOSE 4th November - Sheffield United (h) DRAW 7th November - CC4Watford (a) WIN 11th November - Man city (a) LOSE 18th November - Arsenal (a) LOSE 23rd November - Celta Vigo (h) DRAW 26th November - Portsmouth (h) LOSE 30th November - Frankfurt (a) LOSE Sorry, but I don't think there are enough 'scrapping' players in the squad to do better and the belief within the squad to grind out a win is waning as was shown in the Charlton game.

Sweet Jesus lads, this is a tad harsh so early in the season IMO. Instead of launching a cavalcade of insults now, this particular knacker is gonna reserve judgement until the New Year. Not really harsh imho. Roder can only do a job for Newcastle if he has a squad of players to enable him to do that. Whether it is Roeder's fault or FFS's, the fact remains that when the window slammed shut the defence and attack were shadows of what they should have been. If it was GR's doing, shame on him. If it was FFS, GR should have stood up to him and told him what he wanted. If GR wasn't planning on using Luque, why not sell him or loan him out to get money in and/or some wages off the books? I see absolutely no benefit by waiting till the New Year, the next transfer window will be open and by the time a new manager is appointed, the window will be shut again. If GR is to be replaced, do it in the next 2/3 weeks so the new manager can come in, evaluate the players he's got and then get the players he needs while the window is still open.

Martins - If he's not established as a first team player with Inter and he's being bought for his potential, £10m is a helluva lot of money to get that potential. Duff - Even though Zoggy was in the squad, I did think that Duff's signing would strengthen the attacking options with his versatility as a LW or striker and I still stand by that. What we didn't know was that his (and Martins purchase) would cause serious imbalance in the squad. To achieve that balance, the transfer fee should have been spent elsewhere and settle for just Zoggy (and Luque ) to cover LW. Sibierski - When you say Cole I assume you mean Carlton Cole. You may recall that Spurs were after him and the reports said he failed the medical due to a dodgy knee. He turned up for the medical seriously pissed, which by all accounts is not unusual. Kanu is talented without question but has never been prolific (except this season) so I would say no. That doesn't mean to say I can't understand why anyone would want to sign him, Kanoute falls into the same category. As for Chopra, totally agree. He was never given a serious chance at Newcastle, I would have kept him rather than get £500k. You really can't get much for £500k unless you're really lucky. Rossi - he is no more proven than Eastwood or Lita and certainly less proven than Roberts and McCarthy. I would have had those in before Rossi and I wouldn't argue with Sibierski if he was free (although you rather doubt that). Sibierski may be ageing but has played in the premiership. If you're saying Rossi should be brought in ahead of an older player who would be contracted to Newcastle, I would rather sign another youngster with potential, like Varney at Crewe. Very simply, I can't see oe good reason to help develop another team's players. You may think that Manu aren't true competition for Newcastle at the present time, but Newcastle's ambition should be on that level within Rossi's career span. Bernard - Accept your point about him being a Bosman and therefore being another option in the squad. The other players you mentioned I agree with, maybe except Bridge as he may have taken too much out of the £15m transfer kitty, but the principle I agree with. The defence should have been improved.

Same as the FA, and most football governing bodies. Ban someone for diving and they'll soon think twice about it. They never do though. Remember that £300 fine FIFA (or UEFA, can't remember) handed out for racial abuse? ..... or Aragones the Spanish national coach getting fined £2300 for calling Henry a blurpety blurp!

To be honest I was siding with Roeder for being confident at Bramble to rectify his deficiencies. After all he did well towards the end of last season under the stewardship of Roeder himself. What I'm dissapointed is his failure to capture any decent fullbacks, and his waste of money on Duff. So to summarise, Martins' signing - Yes Duff's signing - No Sibierki's signing - No Rossi's signing -Yes Bernard's signing - No (wanted someone better, or more established) Rather ironic that I should agree with everything you say until the summary when I disagreed with just about everything! Martins - Not at £10m, trophy signing tbh. Duff - unnecessary Sibierski - If a freebie, yes. Could have done a job for Newcastle for a season whilst awaiting Owen's return. Rossi - No, point of principle that I wouldn't want Spurs or Newcastle giving any other club's youngsters experience. Leave that route to Charlton or Fulham. Bernard - No, simply blind panic setting in. For strikers, I wouldn't have argued with Jason Roberts, Leroy Lita or Freddy Eastwood. All 3 could have been signed for less than £6m, those that failed to meet the standard could have been sold at a later window. I would have been happy for any of those to have gone to Spurs prior to signing Mido permanently. Add to those a more experienced striker like Benni McCarthy for another couple of mill and the lack of striking options would have been addressed with 6 strikers (including Sibierski and Ameobi) with Owen waiting to return. Apply a similar strategy with the defence and the £15m transfer fund would have put together an adequate squad numerically and far more balanced in overall strength.

I don't think this is a 'haha I'm right, yaahboo you're wrong' thread tbh. I don't think anyone who thought Roeder was a poor choice is getting any satisfaction from saying 'told you so'. People will be happier when the team starts going up the league table, irrespective of whether Roeder is still in charge or not.
-
Martin Jol I usually enjoy reading your posts, and am always grateful to you for sharing rumours or insider knowledge. But I am dissapointed how you dare not admit your initial opinion, especially after you just critisise Premiership authority as spineless. Here I quote you My second post in this thread went into more detail than just going to Mauritius. Thought he would do better, yep, said he was basically untested on signings, yep. What we didn't know how long it would take him to determine strengths and weaknesses before making a signing. Maybe the most disappointing aspect of his actual managerial regime is his reluctance to attend to the defensive deficiencies in general and his failure to sign scumball on a bosman in particular. As I've said before, Newcastle was his preferred destination.
-
OK, stick with Roeder then. :winking:
-
TBH, I thought Roeder would have ade a better fist of the job than he has. If there was precious little money about (and £15m wasn't a lot for the surgery needed), it would have been more logical to pick up promising players e.g. Freddy Eastwood for £1.5m rising to...., cheap foreigners a la Allardyce or Bosmans. Some would have come good and those that failed could have been shipped out at the next window as Spurs did with Pamarot, Davis, Atouba etc. The point with the failures was that they were sold on without incurring a loss on the transfer fee.
