Leroy Fer is not ready for the step up. I think he was the alternative if Tiote fell through, and we should now concentrate on reinforcements in the final third rather than another central midfielder, where we are well stocked for now. A midfield 2 of Tiote and Barton, with Smith, Guthrie, Nolan and Gosling should be enough for Premiership survival. Up front we only have Carroll and to a lesser extent Lovenkrands and Ameobi, so we need another first teamer for the attacking midfield/fast creative forward role there if we want to be strong enough to avoid being part of the relegation battle.

I honestly can't think of a recent striker from the Eerdivisie (RVN doesn't count) who has made the step up to the big leagues, I was commenting purely on the current state of the league, of course in the past you've had some great goalscorers go on to bigger things and succeed. Why does Ruud van Nistelrooy not count? I would say the likes of Bergkamp, Hasselbaink, Kluivert, Van Persie, Robben, Kuyt, Huntelaar, Makaay, Kalou and many others over the past 10 years prove otherwise. I will now gladly admit that a few of them have also failed to impress when they moved to better leagues abroad (I'd qualify Alves and Kezman in this category), but in general I think there is no denying that players who have been quality in the Eredivisie have adapted really well in better leagues over the years, probably more so than any other league.

I've noticed he often seems to wait too long before putting a cross in, giving the defender time to reposition himself to put a block in, even when there is space to run into nearer the byline. I would like to see him use his pace to run the outside of the defender more often and get past the defender before putting in a cross. Crosses from the byline are generally harder to defend and it will mean he will get more crosses in as he should get the better of many defenders on pace. It's a real shame seeing him whip in crosses only for them to be easily blocked.. Still, he had a decent game yesterday and he is invaluable to us as an outlet when we are under the cosh.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar Or was it England specific? Not England specific, but I wouldn't say Huntelaar had failed abroad. He just happens to end up at clubs where he is benched more than he plays for some reason. When he does actually play he does the business for the most part.
