  6. Magpies miss out on Blues forward Sep 2 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United made a late move for Birmingham City forward James McFadden as a replacement for James Milner. But Brum managing director Karren Brady slapped a £10m fee on the Scottish international and United backed off. The Chronicle revealed yesterday that United chief scout Jeff Vetere had taken in Birmingham’s game with Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday, and in the wake of Milner’s departure McFadden was the target. But Brum boss Alex McLeish did not want to lose his fellow Scot and he was backed up by his managing director. United also made a move for a left-back playing in Europe yesterday – possibly Lazio’s Gugliemo Stendfardo – but this did not come off either. And the wires were hot between Tyneside and the South Coast yesterday after Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp made it clear he was ready to take a chance with United bad boy Joey Barton. Pompey were prepared to pay £2m, but United director of football Dennis Wise wanted double that. And when United said they would take Senegal international midfielder Papa Bouba Diop in part-exchange Redknapp lost interest. Everton were soon made aware that they were wasting their time in trying to lure United skipper Michael Owen to Merseyside. The Toffees phoned the Owen camp late on Sunday night and asked then if the striker would fancy a move to Goodison Park and were given a polite no. Keegan managed to hold on to Alan Smith despite Everton boss David Moyes being ready to pay £2m for the striker. United also decided that the £1.5m Feyenoord put on the table for Tim Krul was not enough and, as a result, the Dutch keeper will not be returning to his Holland. Another player still at St James’s despite interest from Ipswich and Norwich, and Premier League news boys Stoke City and West Brom, is striker Shola Ameobi. But Ameobi is now in the last year of his contract and he will be able to walk away on a free at the end of the season

  10. apologies if this has been posted BBC Radio 5 Live football reporter Juliette Ferrington believes Monday's meeting came about because Keegan is frustrated by what would appear to be a lack of control over transfer activity. "It is thought that the sale of players and the failure to replace them brought this meeting to a head. It has been rumoured over the last few months that his relationship with the club's board has been strained," she said. Keegan has also supported controversial midfielder Joey Barton, after recently spending 74 days in jail for an assault conviction. Barton will also be attending a personal hearing on 5 September after admitting a Football Association violent conduct charge. Ferrington added: "My understanding is that there was a disagreement over Joey Barton about a potential transfer to another Premier League club. "Kevin Keegan wanted him to stay, and of course he gets his way but I'm told the board wanted to sell him."

  12. Colo Told Me Toon Is Fab - Xisco By Craig Hope NEWCASTLE United new boy Xisco has revealed that former Deportivo La Coruna team-mate Fabricio Coloccini gave him the lowdown on life on Tyneside before his move to the Magpies. And the Argentine must have sounded a glowing report with the Spain under-21 striker admitting it was an easy decision to swap the Riazor for St.James' Park. "I spoke with Colo and he told me all about the club and the city," said Xisco in an exclusive interview with nufc.co.uk. "He said it was a great place and that it would make him very happy if I joined him at Newcastle." Xisco joins a growing legion of Spanish-speaking stars in the United dressing room and, while agreeing it will be a big help to have those players around to help him settle in, he says he is determined to learn English as soon as possible. "Of course I know Colo and also Jose Enrique from Spain under-21," he added. "There are also other Spanish speakers and that will be a big help to begin with. "But I want to work on my English and learn the language within the first few months. "That is important because I will be able to get to know all of my team-mates and also settle in the area." http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1381779,00.html
