  4. I’ll fight for Toon place – Ameobi Sep 13 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle SHOLA AMEOBI has revealed that he is ready to fight for his future at St James’s Park. The Nigerian-born striker must have been convinced his career was over during the summer after making it clear to the club that he wanted to leave in order to gain regular first-team football. And at 26, even former boss Kevin Keegan accepted the player’s wish to look for pastures new, There was interest from Hull City, Norwich, Toronto and, more prominently, Ipswich, where Ameobi failed a fitness test, largely due to a hamstring injury sustained during the pre-season friendly against Hertha Berlin in Mallorca. Yet the moment that the transfer window slammed shut, Shola knew he would be a United player until at least January given the paper-thin nature of Newcastle’s squad. He told the Chronicle: “I make no secret of the fact that I want to play for Newcastle United. “First and foremost, I want to stay here. Hopefully I will be given my chance in the next few months to do that. “We have a few players out and I want to grab my chance. If I can do that then great. “But it is down to me, I have to stay fit and make sure I work hard to try to improve my fitness and my all-round game.” Ameobi, who got married over the summer, has had a nightmare two years on the field, with hip and hamstring problems meaning his first-team involvement has been restricted. The striker’s last goal came against Bolton Wanderers almost two years ago in a 2-1 defeat back in the Glenn Roeder era. And the player who is currently United’s top scorer with 45 goals in terms of career strikes from the current squad at Gallowgate, admits it has been a difficult time. He added: “It’s been tough when you don’t know where you will be playing or you don’t know what’s happening. “But I have always just got my head down and got on with it. “I wanted to get fit and I am fit now. Now I want to get a couple of good performances together in a row. “Hopefully, this is the start of better times for me. It has been great to be back in the team and playing. I was out for a long time and been in and out of the team with injury. “We’ve got two weeks to build up our fitness. When you have an international break, you have to use it to get fitter.” Ameobi’s ultimate aim in a black-and-white shirt, though, has to be to lift silverware for the club he loves. And with the backlash from the Kevin Keegan situation, there has been little chance to reflect on what was a good home Carling Cup draw at home to Tottenham later this month. Shola added: “It could have been worse. We have the holders now. We are looking forward to it.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/09/13/i-ll-fight-for-toon-place-ameobi-72703-21811136/

  8. Hughton nufc.co.uk: "They (Geremi and Cacapa) are two very experienced players and it is good to have them back. We still have a few players missing at the moment so to be able to have Geremi and Claudio available is pleasing. It is a boost to have them back, not only for their experience but also for their quality. Jonas came down very heavy on his shoulder. At this particular moment, until he is back with us and has been assessed, we cannot say what the exact damage is. We'll know more once we have seen him."
  9. Laurent Blanc apparently now also a possibility for the national team job
  10. Because we've beaten them all Barca and Inter topping my list then i was about to dive in two footed and say we never beat inter. (NE5 would have had a field day) It was 2-2 that day iirc and they trashed us 1-4 at home!! We beat them in the 60`S or something I think. Or you could just swap Inter with Juve
  11. no s*** sherlock Shola ------ Shola Ameobi: Game we've got to win SHOLA Ameobi has warned that Newcastle United must not have any regrets at the end of their clash with Hull City tomorrow. The Toon striker made his comeback from a hamstring injury in the 3-0 loss against Arsenal. And although the Academy product trudged out of the Emirates feeling disappointed, Ameobi is keen to restart the season with three points against a team who considered snapping up the former England Under-21 star. The Newcastle players have been keeping a low profile with the media this week for obvious reasons but speaking after Arsenal, Ameobi told the Chronicle: “It’s been a good start despite what happened at Arsenal, and we have got these games out of the way now. “We can concentrate on other teams around us – the teams that we know that we have a good chance of doing well against. “We never go to places like Arsenal to lose, but we have to make sure that we look at Hull and pick up three points. “At home you have to try to pick up maximum points and that’s what we’ll try to do.” Ameobi has also had two weeks to shake off a hamstring injury that was originally picked up in the sweltering heat of Majorca in the Mallorca Summer Cup. Speaking on his return from the treatment room, he added: “To play my first game of the season at Arsenal was good for me. “The result wasn’t what we wanted, but it was always going to be tough. “They are a top, top side and they showed that. “For me personally, it was good to get 90 minutes under my belt. “It was a boost to be thrown in there and be told to go out and do a job. “The hamstring feels 100% fine now. “I was champing at the bit to play at Arsenal. “It’s been an up and down couple of seasons for me, but hopefully this is the end of my injury worries and I can push on from here.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/09/12/shola-ameobi-game-we-ve-got-to-win-72703-21805124/

  13. has Xisco trained with us yet? or will today be his first day? Thought he might have trained on Thursday with the U-21 games being on Tuesday this week
  14. Lawro`s predictions With all that has gone on at Newcastle over the past week, the best thing the fans can do is turn up, support their team and hopefully cheer them on to victory. To the same token, if they want to have a bash at the board while they are there then go on and do it. We know it looks a complete and utter shambles but it is important that you don't do anything that upsets the performance of the team. They play a Hull side who in their last match, a 5-0 home defeat by Wigan, were atrocious defensively and that would be a real, real worry for me if I was a Hull fan. The only result I can see is a Newcastle win. Match preview Verdict: 2-0 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7610159.stm
  15. The Chelsea fan wasn`t of Pakistani origin was he? Judging by the other thread one of the Toon Ultra`s wasn`t too keen on them that particular day

  20. Hughton may be at NUFC helm for three weeks Sep 11 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United appear no closer to replacing Kevin Keegan, after telling Chris Hughton that he will be in charge of the team for the next three weeks. While West Ham have appointed Gianfranco Zola and the popular little Sardinian will make his bow in the East End against Newcastle at Upton Park a week on Saturday, there is still no news from St James’s Park on their new boss. And sources inside the club tell me that the plan is for Hughton to look after the shop for the next three weeks. Obviously this would change, as things do in football, if director of football Dennis Wise and vice-president Tony Jimenez suddenly pluck a name out of the hat. While Wise is still pulling the strings, there is always a chance that his big pal Paul Ince will be considered as a replacement for Keegan. Wise is unlikely to be bothered about claims he is only interested in Ince because of their friendship as England players and in their short time together at Swindon. Wise has promoted another of his pals Alan Thompson to help Hughton and academy coach Richard Money and asked the Geordie boy to take a place in the United dug-out for Saturday’s game with Hull – and this even though the once-capped former England international has virtually no coaching experience at all. The odds on Ince being United’s s next manager were 100-1 yesterday morning, but by noon they had crashed to 7-1. The Ince camp is aware of Wise’s interest and Blackburn have made the predictable noises about doing all they can to keep their manager. I hear one of the reasons Ince would consider moving to Tyneside after such a short time at Ewood Park is because he fears Blackburn could be sold in the near future. Mike Ashley has always insisted United are not for sale, but the word on the soccer grapevine this week is that, after all the furore at St James’ Park in the past week, the situation may have changed. There is also a lot of talk United will wait until after the Spurs Carling Cup tie at St James’ Park on September 24 and then unveil Tottenham’s assistant boss Gus Poyet as their new manager. :: CHRONICLE chief sports writer Alan Oliver will be featured on Sky’s Premier League preview tomorrow night and again on the BBC's Football Focus on Saturday lunch- time.
  21. the only consolation there is that Hull have a squad of pretty much Championship standard players......Edgar might do okay then
