  5. Cambodia has banned foreign players from taking part in its cup competition for being "too good", the country's soccer chief said on Friday. Most of the 30 teams competing in the Hun Sen Cup favoured the ban because they had an unfair advantage over local players "They're taller, stronger and more experienced, so it's unfair if we let them play. They're too good compared with Cambodian players." The ruling means North Korean, Nigerian and Brazilian imports will have to sit it out until May before the new league season begins. Sao Sokha said the ban did not violate FIFA rules and that it was the wish of the country's powerful premier to develop local soccer talent. "We are not discriminating against foreigners, but the prime minister wants to give our Khmer players a chance to win and to gain some national pride," Hun Sen has offered $10,000 of his own money to the winning team with prizes of $5,000 for the runners up. Coach Los Salakhan, whose team Khemara won last year's Cambodian Premier League with the help of Brazilian and North Korean players, said he had to accept the decision. "If they let them play then they play, if not they just stand and watch the game," adding that his North Korean players had not kicked a ball since December and had already left the country. Cash-strapped Cambodia is one of South East Asia's least successful soccer nations and are currently 176th in the FIFA rankings. They failed to reach this year's ASEAN championships after finishing behind minnows Laos and the Philippines in the pre-qualifying tournament. http://football.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/feedstory/0,,-6387918,00.html ---------------------------- imagine if they did that for the cup in this country

  7. Conservative Party leader David Cameron has suggested a Tory government would welcome the return of terraces to English football grounds. Cameron said there was evidence that other countries managed to organise safe standing areas, and pledged to launch a review of the current strict regulations in the UK if he came to power. But he insisted the "first priority" must always be safety following the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which more than 90 fans died. Answering questions from visitors to his website, the Tory leader said: "Obviously the first priority here has got to be safety after the dreadful events at Hillsborough. We really have to bear that in mind. "But I understand the point that other countries manage to organise things in a slightly different way, and there may be some more modern ways of organising the limited seating areas. "What I would say is that when we come into government I would ask the sports minister to review the existing regulations to take into account the views of the football authorities, the police, the clubs, the fans, and we will have a really good look at this." More than 100 MPs have signed an early-day motion from Mike Hancock, Lib Dem member for Portsmouth South, calling on the Government to "re-examine the case for limited sections of safe standing areas". Currently football clubs in England's top two divisions are legally obliged to have all-seater stadia. Sports minister Richard Caborn - MP for Sheffield Central at the time of the Hillsborough disaster - has expressed his opposition to reintroducing terraces. But he has agreed to meet supporters of the campaign in light of support for the EDM. http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=cameron+backs+terraces&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

  11. Dyer: It's Lucky London By Craig Hope KIERON Dyer heads to Fulham hoping that the Magpies can maintain this season's impressive form in the capital. Dyer was part of the United team which went 30 games without a win in London, but memories of that woeful four-year run are now a distant memory for the 27-year-old. And with seven points from four visits this term, Dyer is looking to add to the Toon's capital gains. He told nufc.co.uk: "We had a great win against Tottenham the last time we were in the capital and hopefully we can build on that. "We beat West Ham, drew with Arsenal and beat Spurs and also beat Watford in the cup so we go there full of confidence. "It is winnable game and we are on a bit of a roll after beating Aston Villa the other night." Dyer has started 15 games this season and found the net five times since returning from a hamstring problem which had kept him sidelined since last April. And the England man is hoping his injury troubles are now behind him. He added: "I feel like I am firing on all cylinders again. I think I've played more games in 2007 than I did in the whole of last season. Things are looking up and long may it continue. "I think the game I felt the worst in was obviously the Birmingham game in the FA Cup. "At Tottenham we were brilliant and then against Birmingham it was like hitting a brick wall. "Straight after the Birmingham game we had West Ham but we've had a 10 day break which has done me the world of good. "I feel fine again now." And Dyer welcomed his new team-mate Oguchi Onyewu to Tyneside: "Gooch looks a big lad, I have seen him at the training ground and hopefully he will be a good addition to the squad. "We are short of numbers at the back with Peter Ramage and Craig Moore injured so hopefully he will come in and settle down and do a good job for Newcastle." http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~975070,00.html (nice pic on the link)

  14. OGUCHI Onyewu has taken part in his first training session with his Newcastle United team-mates. The 24-year-old loan signing from Standard Liege joined his new United colleagues for the first time at the club's Benton-based training ground complex. The United States international is in Glenn Roeder's squad for Saturday's trip to Craven Cottage, where the Magpies face a Fulham side just four points behind them in the Premiership. http://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/73171487.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF19390335F8FA9CA92A6DCE215C71CD39852329DF394FE942516 http://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/73171483.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF19390335F8FA9CA92A6DCE215C71CD39852C7631F868A8C7D54 http://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/73171433.jpg?v=1&c=NewsMaker&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF19390335F8FA9CA92A601ED0F8D7BFF8C58C7631F868A8C7D54
