Why should we be allowed to take on loan players at this stage simply because we're badly managed? We just got £35million and we didn't have the presence of forethought to secure at least loan deal replacements for the players who departed. They don't operate in a vacuum though, if they're getting squeezed by higher prices from suppliers, less income and lack of available credit then they have to tighten their belts the same. Not clear however what "living within our means" entails when the reality is Mike Ashley is a multi-millionaire?

Upon reflection, I'd have to say your analysis is very plausible, perhaps the most rational explanation there's been so far of why he's acting the way he is.

Mind you, I've been thinking...imagine if by some amazing twist of fat (or better still, by virtue of actual team effort) we'd won this game 2-0 or 3-0 tonight. Nobody would be crying out about a relegation danger or a striker crisis. All there would be was recognition that it was an astute bit of business, selling Carroll at such a premium before the bubble burst, and Ashley & Llambiarse would have been vindicated in their "wisdom".

To me it just looks like childish finger-pointing after the fact, as of course it totally overlooks their own role in bringing the club to the point in the first place, by their own mismanagement (getting rid of Keegan, appointing of Joe Kinnear, underinvesting in the squad etc). The task Shearer was handed back then was, by any measure and for any manager, a very challenging one given the state of the club and the squad at the time.
