He hasn't given a definitive 'No', but it appears he hasn't given a 'Yes' either, because if our bid has been accepted and he says he is ready to join then this would be all tied up right?

If he is holding out for Milan then maybe we should just pull out and let him go there. This whole thing is a bit strange.

We would absolutely would be signing him as a starter, think it’s clear we are working very hard to stretch the budget as much as possible due to FFP. He would cost minimum 20 million, we aren’t in a position to spend this on him then more on a another winger to start and then more on a striker.

You are wrong. If we move out current backups we will need to replace them, and so we will use any money raised from the sales towards replacements. No idea why you keep making out this is impossible for us to do.

By the way we're supposedly looking at bidding somewhere around £20 million for that Braga wonderkid winger who will definitely be a backup if he comes in, so there's that too.

They will want at least 20 million for him, young English tax and all that. My point is we aren’t in a position where we will spend that on a backup player, and if he signs I think it would be as a starter and for me he isn’t the answer.

We would not sign him as a starter. If we move current backup players the money would then be available to replace them I would presume.

The last two players we have signed from Burnley have been absolute splodge. Avoid them at all costs.

Aye. Imagine looking at Hendrick and Wood and thinking "I'm sure 38 games 0 goals Dwight McNeil will work out this time!"

Get as far away from Burnley players as we can. McNeil has worse numbers than the players we're trying to move on.

This is an incredibly simple way of analysing a player because he happens to have played in the same team man. My goodness

But you're entitled to view it this way I guess. I'm looking forward to him moving to another club, and seeing what happens.

I think you may be disappointed if you think we would spend big on McNeil to be back up, we haven’t got a squad for that to be the case.

Who said anything about spending big? They've just been relegated.

Besides as I said he's one I would only see coming in if we move on the likes of Almiron and Murphy, who are the current backups.

  6. Man, I am going to back Howe's judgement with whoever he brings in.

Think a lot of you are setting yourselves up to be disappointed, if you think we are now above signing the likes of McNeil as a young backup option.

I think if we manage to move on the likes of Almiron and Murphy we will look at bringing in a back up player in that position along with the first teamers we are already looking at there.

Going to be an interesting summer.

We should be targeting players capable of playing in a side challenging for the top six. Raphinha and Phillips would be excellent signings on that basis.  Dwight McNeil is nowhere near that level. Ward-Prowse is more like a top 10 level player, ditto Pope.

What is any of that based on? None of it is based on anything of substance.

The season before last Leicester finished 5th while using Marc Albrighton regularly as a backup out wide.

Some of you lot are getting way too carried away already.

    This guy is kinda amazing.

Edit: The Twitter guy I mean.

Osimhen is the striker Arsenal need to land in order to keep up with the moves being made by the other clubs at the top for sure. He's the one I think that is of the same calibre that is still up for joining them.

Nunez, Haaland, Kane, Lewandowski possibly at Chelsea, and Osimhen possibly at Arsenal would be nuts. Not sure what Man United would do in that Scenario, as I don't think Ronaldo quite keeps up with that lot, but maybe he does still.

Don't know why anyone would want us to waste our time looking at lower mid table PL level players. Mcneil may not even be that good.

Who on earth signs players only based on where their previous club finished up

Liverpool signed both Robertson and Wijnaldum from relegated clubs and they made major contributions to their title winning team.

Everton and Leeds were mid to lower level teams this past season right? And so we shouldn't be looking at Raphinha, Richarlison or Kalvin Philips if they want to join right? I mean ... I just don't understand this mindset.

It's okay though lets see what happens, someone like Southampton, West Ham or Brentford will pickup the likes of Cornet and McNeil if we don't and when they go there and start performing everyone will start going on about how great they are.

Cornet is a good player and better than what we currently have. I’d take McNeil as well; ready-made champions league level players will be hard to come by without having European football to offer. People don’t want mercenaries who will just come here for the money but at the same time want elite young players to come here despite inevitably  having (currently) better suitors. Our best bet is to bring in young/youngish and undervalued players -like high PL performers who’ve just been relegated eg. Sarr, Cornet, Pope, McNeil- climb up the table, get the FFP monkey off our back through sponsorships etc. and push on from there.

I'm with you. No doubt about it

Are we in a position now though where we can afford to take a risk on someone who has done nothing of note for about 18 months ?

Well, as a back up option on the right hand side I would do it. The guy has talent and having another left footed winger in a back up role there would be good, as I assume Almiron will be leaving.

I think under Howe and playing in our system he would do more than Almiron, Murphy or Matt Ritchie ever did, and he will only keep getting better as he is still young.

  12. As for Dwight McNeil, I've always liked him, and I think he has been really unfortunate getting stuck in that Burnley team.

He's just 22 years old though, and so their relegation will be good for him as he will get a move out of there.

I'd have him as a young back up to whoever we bring in on the right hand side. He's the type I could see really flourish under a coach like Howe.

In any case apparently the likes of Southampton, Brentford, Leicester and West Ham are all looking at him too, and so he'll be fine either way. I'm calling it now though, once he gets out of Burnley and goes to a team that plays a more current style of football he is going to come along really well.

  13. Cornet has had a pretty bizarre career in regards to how he has been moved around all over the place position wise. He's not even a striker.

In France he was a 1 in 3 goal scorer on both the right wing and then the left wing, but then somehow ended up playing left wing back at Lyon before then coming over to Burnley and playing up front.

If he had remained a winger he would have been a much bigger prospect by now as he was very productive in those roles. No idea why he started getting played at left back.

In 61 games as a left winger - 22 goals and 9 assists

In 54 games as a right winger - 19 goals and 10 assists

  14. I guess Kulusevski will then be more of a rotational player then, as he is still young. Makes sense.

Son, Kane and Raphinha front three is absolutely filthy to be fair. Absolutely nasty stuff.

  15. He looks a fantastic prospect Fabio Vieira. That's a great pickup for Arsenal. Should be able to rotate in for Saka and Odegaard, and Pepe should be out the door now.

Martinelli and Smith-Rowe for the left hand side, and Saka and Vieira for the right hand side, with both Smith-Rowe and Vieira also able to play number 10 is a nice set of options.

  16. Nice gig for Fonseca. Lille have some talents he can work with. I'll be rooting for him. Appreciated the enthusiasm he showed for the Newcastle gig last year.

Spot on.  Remember getting thumped at home off Fulham under Souness, after he chucked on a load of forwards?

Yeah, it happens so often with the PFMs and my goodness there have been a few at Newcastle over the years.

It's really hard to believe that a manager at this level can be that completely clueless. They think attacking football is some sort of magic that occurs due to the players you play, and if you play too many of these mystical attacking players the defence suffers. They just cannot understand or recognise that this style of play actually has to be drilled into the team, and specifically worked on.

I think managers that were defenders or more defensive minded midfielders just tend to have this blind spot, and get too caught up on working on defensive shape and organisation and tend to not do enough work on the offensive side of things. The sad thing is England tend to love hiring these defensive minded managers, even now with so much attacking talent. It's a damn shame.

Really bad sign. Once a manager starts talking about conceding goals because the team was 'too attacking' you just know they don't really know what they're doing, as far as setting up a team to play football and create chances. Classic PFM mindset.

England were not too attacking, because they never were able to consistently move the ball around and progress through the lines to continuously create chances. That is attacking football, not just throwing on more attacking players who have clearly not been instructed well enough or done the right sort of preparation to be able to use the ball to create chances and score goals, and once that inevitably fails then saying the team was too attacking.

It's the same mindset of the likes of Pardew and Bruce throwing on 4 strikers at the end of games to try and get a goal, as if that automatically makes the team a more attacking outfit because more strikers are on the pitch, never mind how the team is then actually supposed to work the the ball forward up to them.

    Ridiculous.

  19. My goodness ... just two weeks left?! Yikes, didn't even realise it was quite that soon.

Hopefully we can manage it somewhat early into pre-season then, so they can get at least a few games together.

We have a long window but honestly I'll probably be a bit worried if we don't have a couple of players (on top of Targett) through the door by the time pre-season starts.

I'd then expect us to have all our priority positions filled by first league game.

You'd hope that late in the window will be moving out remaining deadwood and perhaps moving for any other 'market opportunity' signings that come up.

Yeah, would be great if we could have a decent number of signings in by pre-season man. Think that's so important.

  21. So we seem to be aiming quite high to start with, as far as targets we are looking at are concerned, and this is likely to take a bit more time to agree a price with teams who have a player that lots of clubs like, and it is also likely to take more time to agree with the players and their agents too.

So a quick example of a more popular player we have looked at is Moussa Diaby (£40 - £60 million) and one of the alternatives we have supposedly looked at that already apparently has a set price, and is a seemingly more straightforward transfer is Ludo Blas (£17 million).

Just wondering what people think gives us the best chance to really have a good season where we could possibly over achieve next year, get players we can early on, or wait longer with a greater chance of getting in some of the first targets, albeit towards the end of the window?

I really like some of our supposedly more secondary targets, and so I think I might be leaning towards getting guys in early on and having them be a part of most of the pre-season.

Love Chancel ... but man, I think he's been pulling a fast one.

Really glad he's managed to do so well though and he's forged a pretty sweet career so far.
