I don't know who runs football insider but it might have just become my favourite site

Apparently Ronaldo is also intimidating everyone with his moaning and whinging on the pitch, which was the most predictable thing ever.

There's nothing wrong with that approach when you put it like that. Obviously they managed to spin it as negatively as possible in the earlier piece by saying they don't want to spend in case they get relegated.

Yeah, they tried to be slick. Its a very fair approach really.

And if we do stay up it will then have us in a very strong position to then go for a much higher calibre of player in the summer.

  3. From football insider ...

"The initial plan had been to spend big on permanent signings but there has now been a U-turn in policy from the leaders based in Saudi Arabia and England.

The club’s hierarchy believe it would be better for the club to use the loan market amid fears of spending big money on stars and then getting relegated.

United chiefs are also aware that it will be hard to lure elite-level players to Tyneside in January at a time when they are facing a relegation battle.

That club are laying the groundwork for loan deals or loan-to-buy signings that could be completed at the end of the season if they stay up."

In all honesty, I actually think that makes sense. Buying permanently now will mean that we would have to perhaps go with lesser players than we can get next summer. So unless we can bring in some of those better players on an initial loan deal that only becomes permanent if we stay up, then its not the smartest move really. Even if our top options did come in permanently, what on earth do we then do if we go down? Immediately sell them for a loss?

Don't think I have too much of a problem with the approach to be honest. Due to the financial crisis at so many clubs, there will be decent deals that can be done that will work for us still.

Any players we do bring in permanently would likely be players we really like who are not adverse to doing a stint in the champo next season if it comes down to it.

I don't think you need specialist sports analysts to pinpoint his flaws. His work outside the area is fine IMO, but he needs to be attacking the box in the penalty area. He just doesn't think like an instinctive striker.

The full article is really good and worth reading. It details the kind of things they have been looking at working on. A lot of it was defensive schemes and pressing patterns. I think analysts can also help with some decision making, positions to take up during build up play etc. There's loads of things you can continue to review and improve on.

Eddie Howe himself has even said he produces individual video breakdowns for players with tips on areas of improvement, and so I'm sure he'll be thrilled that Joelinton has already been working on this having paid someone himself to assist him. It's really very impressive to be honest. Happy for him that his desire to work and improve will now be backed by the new manager. Very good things to come for him.

This would be terrible. He's the biggest yes man at the club and nothing but a Glazer puppet who knows fuck all about football.

    Please fuck off Ed.

Woodward at Man U and Levy at Tottenham have been making a mess of the two clubs for seemingly ages now.

It's allowed a lot of other clubs to catch up and instead of getting proper people in, instead they try to stop other club's takeovers or join super leagues to consolidate their positions. Farcical stuff.

  6. So apparently he had hired an analyst outside of the club to review his clips and to improve on areas of his game, as under Bruce the analysts didn't have time to do so ... of course. Even did work to prepare for Howe's style once the news broke he would be coming in. No wonder he started off so well.

Speak to anyone behind the scenes at the club and they will tell you about Joelinton's 'heart' and determination to make the move work nearly two-and-a-half years on. So much so, ChronicleLive understands Joelinton has enlisted the help of a fitness coach, Felipe Lira, and analyst, Diego Vieira, to make the most of his time away from the training ground.

Joelinton has logged on to a Zoom call with Vieira, the founder of the Outlier FC agency, after every game for a few months now to review his clips. It is important to stress that these sessions supplement the work Joelinton does at Benton with Newcastle's own coaches and analysis department who, naturally, do not always have the time to go over the forward's clips after every game.

As a result, Vieira always has the manager's philosophy and demands in mind and the Sao Paulo-based analyst has already been looking at how Howe used to set his side up at Bournemouth.

Vieira believes Joelinton could yet be 'a powerful tool' for the new head coach after noting that there was 'more structure' to Bournemouth's play.

"We are already doing a lot of work on our end here to identify what Eddie was doing at his last club and presenting every single detail possible to Joelinton," Vieira told ChronicleLive.

"Our focus and goal was to give Joelinton some specifics about it during this two-week period so he can show the new manager in training that he understands and is willing to put the work in to help him and the club.

"He's a guy who's willing to do it. There's not one single player we work with who tells me, 'I love defending. I live for it' but they have to do it. Joelinton understands that actually he has to work when he doesn't have the ball."

Joelinton benefited from a similar arrangement during a testing period while the then Hoffenheim forward was on loan at Rapid Vienna back in 2016.

He made a bad decision for their third goal. Not sure why he ran over to to try double up on a player and just left Onyeka and gave him a free shot. Murphy was about to win the ball back

That aside he looked okay on highlights

I think there was such a desire to press as instructed that we then went steaming in to win the ball back a bit carelessly at times and the ball ran through for them to capitalise. Happened on both their first goal and their last one.

Good to see the effort from the team, but just needed to be a bit more under control when going for the ball. Think we'll get better at that as they continue to work on the new approach.

Indeed, it was the kind of display that convinced Newcastle to smash their transfer record back in 2019 after watching the Brazilian extensively at Hoffenheim.

Lutz Pfannenstiel, who was Hoffenheim's director of international relations and scouting at the time, knew 'the recruitment guys at Newcastle very well' and noticed how 'they were there a lot at our games - even away games'.

"They really scouted as much as they could do and the kid showed his quality in the games they watched," he told ChronicleLive.

"Recruitment is very sensitive because, completely independent from Joelinton, you can see one player who functions perfectly at that club, moves on and goes to another club and nothing happens and he goes to a third club and suddenly he's a superstar again. You never have any guarantee.

"Newcastle invested so much time in analysing that particular player. They did their homework, they did their job, and everything else is something you cannot 100% influence. It is a bit of a lottery sometimes.

"In my opinion, he is a fantastic player. I think he can really make his mark on the Premier League. There is not a single doubt in my mind that he has the quality at the end of the day."

Some insight from Hoffenheim's side on the work that went into scouting Joelinton from our recruitment team, only to then hand him over to clueless Steve Bruce man

Bet he's going crazy locked in a hotel room. Walls covered in tactical analysis and player stats while rocking back and forth on the end of his bed repeatedly saying "Hendrick is not an option"

Hendrick was away on international duty. Now he's back I would not be the least bit surprised if Hendrick is the next to put in decent performances for Howe in that box to box role Willock was supposed to be playing on Saturday, which he just didn't perform well enough in.

Hendrick is more comparable to the likes of Harry Arter, Dan Gosling and Lewis Cook, who Howe typically got a lot out of when used in that role at Bournemouth.

  10. Shearer appears to be one of those that always blames the players for not trying hard enough when things don't work out, with everything therefore being their fault in those situations. Makes me wonder what on earth these guys think a manager is supposed to be responsible for? Unfortunately, the man is clearly a PFM.

That’s his only flaw. If I was Pep, he would be doing finishing drills all day. I’ve seen him in England training sessions and when he scores, he can be very arrogant. Take that out of his game and he’s a superstar. Grealish taking his place in the early games  was lunacy.

Just fluffed the most simplest of tap in finishes.

It's such a luxury playing in a good team with other good players, because such things just get overlooked when you win anyway.

Needs some new boots.  Slipped multiple times yesterday.

He is generally a bit awkward/clumsy at times and so I think we'll always see that happen occasionally.

Hopefully better fitness levels, which will get his legs under him more and improve his core strength will see less of that.

  13. Nagelsman liked him a lot, when we bought him Klopp was quoted as referring to it as a really good signing, Howe comes in and says good things about him having worked with him in training a couple of weeks. These are all sensible managers that have something about them.

Think he was just very unfortunate to have come in under that joker Bruce that not only had him playing in a horrifically negative team, but also couldn't be bothered to even get the players fit enough, never mind actually giving them any kind of direction or instructions to help improve them.

Thing about Joe is he seems the sort that will always just do what he is told and never complain but needs a lot of guidance and so not really a player with natural in game instincts, and so with a great coach and tactician he will follow instructions well and so will look a lot better, and with an incompetent clown he will then just look completely lost and ineffective.

I mean we all already knew what a disaster Bruce was, but it is going to become increasingly evident the extent to which he was really tanking the value of every single aspect of the club, while taking days off and going off on holidays mid season.

  14. Looked so good today man. Shocked at how well he closed down and also won the ball.

Might just be that Howe is the type of manager that gets through to him, if so that would be great, because he can add a lot to the team. Let down by his midfield partner today really, as Willock was poor in that central midfield role.

It was interesting watching match of the day and seeing them highlight in the Chelsea game how Jorginho sat deeper and pinged balls about, while Kante got further forward and tried to create overloads higher up the pitch, in their 3-4-3. We seemed to try to mimick that partnership a bit with Jonjo deep and Willock getting forward, but Willock just didn't do enough at all.

  15. That chance for Joleinton at the end is so unfortunate man, just needed the ball to be played out in front of him a bit more because of how well the Brentford defender chases back. Could have been an epic ending.

Having rewatched the highlights from the game we were really unfortunate with their first and last goals. Their second was quality play though.

Shocked at how well Jonjo closed down and won the ball back at times, while Willock seemed to struggle with that task more, and so really not sure he can play in that deeper role now.

Darlow man ... wow. Horrible decision making and timing when coming out to claim the ball. just causes unnecessary panic at the back.

Darlow and Willock out for the next game and we could see a lot of improvement.

  16. Never really felt this guy was the greatest defender really.

Looked solid in Rafa's really structured defence that sat deeper and looked to counter from there, as that covers him more.

Just really not sure how well he'll do defensively in a more attack minded setup like Eddie Howe's that pushes up more.

  17. Really important that we didn't lose today as that would have been so incredibly demoralising and devastating. Remove Darlow's error on the first and we win this game.

So many incredible positives after just two weeks with the new management team, and it will only continue to get better from here. The real kicker today was the way the other results went.

Dubravka coming in will be massive and I think Hayden also will need to come in for Willock also. Almiron and Lewis can also now get caught up having been away on international duty, and I think they will have important parts to play too.

Lets keep our heads up. At least the boys are all going to give this survival a proper go and not just capitulate pathetically.
