Yeah but then it mentions technical ability which I found strange, I mean everyone wants a physical player who has good technique. Personally I would rather prioritize technical ability but that’s just my preference

Looks like Howe is looking to build a more dynamic team with very physical and aggressive pressing off the ball, and one that attacks the opposition with power, pace and ball carrying ability. We will need to find players like this with better technical ability than we currently have through the squad at the minute, but they won't necessarily be the highly technical types that you tend to find with slower paced, ultra possession heavy sides.

He was attempting to sign players to go play down to Bournemouth. He's hardly going to be competing with the established PL clubs during his time at Bournemouth where finances were tight, stadium was small and you had to find the exact right Howe type of player within the aforementioned constraints.

    Yeah, this is constantly overlooked.

Think he did well considering how small a club they were and how much above their weight they were punching.

They didn't have anywhere near the size of infrastructure behind the scenes regarding scouting and analysis.

Don’t disagree about price or competitors. Just that we’d be interested and that we have been for a while. It’s only natural to be wanting the best players. Our best time was last summer though, I think, when we probably could’ve bid under the radar, so to speak.

I think we'll start moving for these types of players once we have first built up the rest of the squad and become more of a consistent top 4 threat and managed to at least feature in the Champions League a few times. Right now we're just not there yet.

We’ve been ‘in’ for him for a couple of years now- there’s always been rumours about our interest. Whether he’d come is another question, given the other clubs likely to be interested.

“with reports suggesting Newcastle have seen a previous approach for the 24-year-old turned down”

    https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-napoli-victor-osimhen-transfer-26424194.amp

edit- quick google search shows plenty of rumours about a possible €100m bid being made by us last year for him.

Hey man, if you believed those reports cool. I didn't for one second.

If we had gotten Joao Pedro instead of Isak I think we would have been in for Osimhen this summer as number one striker. Isak is number one for foreseeable I think as they would've sold him being a central part of the project like Bruno when he was bought.

We would not have been in for Osimhen man

I've always thought Eddie has preferred Burn because he makes the 3 when we're in possession/attacking positions whilst Trips bombs forward.

City look like they do the same

More to do with Burn's limitations in bombing forward and running at the opposition with the ball, so he was used that way instead.

Howe has always preferred to have full backs that push on ahead of his wide men, who play a bit narrower.

  7. With that Athletic article saying we are looking for technical players with power, pace and athleticism, surely we'd be looking at Marcus Thuram who is on a free this summer? Can play across the front three too. I like him a lot.

Seems too good an option to pass up if we can do a deal there.

Agreed but it just doesn’t seem like he’s the long term solution.  Certainly will be something internal where they feel he isn’t quite good enough

What? ... um, no. I see people have already forgot about the performances he was putting in last season. If they didn't think he wasn't good enough they would have sent him back after the loan.

We are going to have to have two decent players in each position going forward and so it makes sense we will be getting in another left back.

That’s pretty much what the article says in reference to Burn being the Botman back up. The article says the club are aware of the need for greater squad depth so think Targett and a new LB would see plenty of game time.

Ah, okay. Haven't read it yet, but yeah that makes perfect sense. Howe has always played with full backs that push forward while having his wide men slightly narrower, so that makes sense.

I feel really sorry for Matt Targett like, he's literally not done anything averagely let alone badly.

The injury messed him up this season as he would have played more. He'll bounce back.

Think us getting another left back will be to rotate with Targett, especially as we will have more games, with us likely to be in a European competition.

I think from next season Burn will play at left back only in emergency situations, and will instead mostly fill the rotation/backup centre back role as an alternative to Botman.

For anyone who can’t access it, targets mentioned in the article:

    LB: Tierney, Lodi, Robinson

CM: Caicedo, Mctominay, Alvarez, Paulinha, Onana, Neves, Maddison, Tielemans

Forward: Nico Williams, Brennan Johnson, Joao Pedro.

Good to see Joao Pedro's name still on the list, as he should be more available this summer with Watford not looking like they will come up.

Think he'd be a great rotation option/understudy to Isak going forward, as he has a similar game in that he drops into space and runs the channels and is an excellent dribbler. He can also cover both wide positions.

Nico Williams was our Gordon back up in January, anyone know much about him ?

Saw the reports that he was the Gordon backup in January, but he may well still be on the list, and they were just looking to get one of them in January.

Gordon seems to have been the young rotation option for the left side, as a right footer that cuts in.

Nico Williams could well be the young rotation option for the right side, as a left footer that cuts in, as we still don't have another left footer to play on that side. He's a quick good dribbler with a lot of potential to grow still and apparently has a release clause of £45 million, so similar in price to Gordon. H e played against us in the summer preseason game at St. James' park.

Think @The Prophet called him out to flop in the summer.

The signing didn't make sense as he is not a Moyes type striker.

He's very technical and his link up play is top notch provided you play it into his feet consistently when he drops into space.

Moyes does not play that way. He already had major issues with a similar profile of striker in Seb Haller, so no idea what on Earth he was doing going for the same type again.

People were calling City boring the other day. They're a class above.

It's one game man. Against a pitiful side.

Harrowing game for Gvardiol. Leipzig have probably lost £20 million on his fee from this game alone ;D

  15. The Bundesliga is so embarrassing man.

Even as they are getting annihilated here the commentators were talking about how one of their best midfielders is of course off to Bayern in the summer.

I mean what is the point of that league to just feed Bayern so they can try to win the Champions League while walking through the domestic competition?

    Complete farce.

I don't think we are, they'd snap our hands off

Let's try a different player, if Villa bid £100m for Willock what do you think we would do?

Watkins is Villa's best player right now, which is why I compared him to Bruno, who is our best, but if that is too far fetched then let's say Joelinton rather than Willock. Would we accept a £100 million bid from Villa specifically, bearing in mind we have money already and they are direct competitors at the minute?

I don't think we would. It's about the optics of either club selling a major asset to the other specifically, bearing in mind the money we both have and the similar ambitions. Think they would avoid it at all costs.

  17. 6 hours ago, Geordie Ahmed said:

I'm not thinking about it, I'd tell them to do one but why are you comparing Bruno to Ollie Watkins? They aren't on the same level

You need to read the full dialogue.

He said if we bid £100 million for Watkins that Villa would accept. I said they wouldn't because they are rich themselves and they will see us as direct rivals for trying to break into the top spots in the league, and he's probably their best player at the minute.

So I was essentially saying it would be like us accepting a £100 million bid or any kind of bid from Villa for Bruno. It just wouldn't happen.
