You can't blame the midfield for Jagielka ball watching on two occasions. The fact is there are three out of the back 4 who aren't good enough. ...but you can the midfield for the amount if exposure Jagielka suffered per game. When you're defence isn't good enough you need a midfield that will A) keep the ball and/or B) shield the back four. Ours was set up to do neither. Or he could just select defenders that are good enough. This isn't club football where you're restricted by budget, some more than others, where you may need to shield certain players. This is the World Cup and we have decent defenders who aren't even there. Steven Gerrard isn't a shielding type midfielder nor will he ever be, he's a playmaker whose legs aren't what they were. Jordan Henderson is a box to box bog standard midfielder who has had a good season despite previously looking average at best.

Gerrard deserved his place, firstly on the back of a very good Premiership season, where he was comfortably the best English midfield player. Secondly he has been worthy of his position because of his performances whilst he's been captain. He was our best player at Euro 12 and has been consistently adequate since. However, it is definitely time to move on from him now, I'd leave him out of the side for the Costa Rica game. That said, there'd be a few more Merseyside players I'd be leaving out with him.....in fact all of them except Sturridge, Sterling and Barkley. I never rated Sir Bobby as an England manager. In 2 World Cups we had fairly successful campaigns in spite of his management not because of it. But he wouldn't have been afraid to throw the likes of Barkley in from the start, like he did with Gazza in much the same circumstances pre Italia 90.

Incidentally Wayne Rooney should have 4 goals to his name in this World Cup.

It's a sign of the manager's intention when he selects him because he is the best defensive forward we have. Ferguson used to select him in all of the games when he knew his side weren't as good as the opponents.

Hodgson has pensioned off one prematurely and not tried hard enough for another. Cole and Terry. And while they would've papered over the cracks, the likes of Shaw could've learned from them. Hope Hodgson does the decent thing and falls on his sword and the FA go back for Hoddle who clearly is cut out for International management more than the day to day style of club management.
