I don't remember - were the group stages bad back then too? Yeah, I don't really want to go back to 16 as there are still many good to decent nations missing these Euros with 24 teams. Only problem with 32 is that the qualifications becomes almost worthless. 12 teams qualify for the NFL playoffs. They should copy them and introduce byes. Top two from each group go through, but the best 4 teams advance straight to the QFs. Would encourage teams to go for 3 wins.

But you can't know that, you haven't seen ALL of the players. Not sure you need to have seen every single player play to know that the standard of football is generally better. I don't think you can compare today's players to those from decades ago. The standard's changed because things like coaching methods and tactics have improved, not because players have got more talented.. Who knows how good Di Stefano would have been in today's Real team, or how good Ronaldo would have been in his? Would Messi have been the same player if he was playing in a rigid VM formation and smoked like a chimney? What would Pele have been capable of in Pep's Barcelona? It's pointless speculating. Even the physics of the ball are completely different, changing the whole dynamics of the gameplay. Pardew was onto something when he said science was against us.
