So what if Portsmouth finish 5th and beat Cardiff in the final? I have no idea... I guess that it would go to 6th (purely a guess though), but there would most likely be extensive appeals, we'd all get sick of hearing about it and we wouldn't know until 2 minutes before the 1st round kicks off who would actually be playing.

Do you have a source for Wikipedia being right? The FA reference cited for that information on Wikipedia (after you realise the references are 1 out) is dated 04 February 2003. I don't, but what is said there is what I have always thought happens. That doesn't mean much though...

This is getting so complicated, I'll try to summarise, but I'm starting to get confused: UEFA Cup places: 5th in league League Cup winners (Spurs) FA Cup winners If Portsmouth win the FA Cup, & finish 5th, the cup runners-up get the UEFA Cup place. Wikipedia is right - the only scenario where 6th gets the spot is if both cup finalists were in the top 5 in the league, which is impossible this season. Hopefully that's right!

I voted for Stephen Carr, on the basis that whilst Smith isn't particularly great in any position, he is a useful squad player if we were to get a heap of injuries. If Ramage was still here it would be purely as backup and Ameobi hasn't been able to get near the first team recently, with Carroll now ahead of him in the pecking order. And Nicky Butt if he was still here I would hope he would drop to more of a backup role. Stephen Carr being second-choice right back would mean that he would be the most likely to play regularly...

Have a great glory hunter story. An ex-friend of mine started following football religiously the same time that I did at the start of the 2002/03 season (when we both started playing ourselves). I had declared myself earlier a Newcastle supporter (I'll explain why in a minute), and she had decided to support Liverpool as she loved Michael Owen and because she thought they would win. Anyway, this was the season that the Liverpool side had a massive slump from about November and she stopped talking about games with me because they weren't winning (I think they went from Nov-mid Jan without winning from memory...). She went overseas at the end of January 2003 and came back with a 'Beckham 7' shirt and declared herself a Manchester United supporter. Yep. Changed allegiances to one of Liverpool's greatest rivals just like that. We watched the Newcastle-Man Utd 2-6 game in April and she was up and cheering like it was fantastic as I slumped on the couch. I mean honestly, I can't understand how you could just switch like that. After we finished school (end of 2003) I have rarely seen her. Anyway, I chose to support Newcastle because I saw an interview on TV with Shearer and was drawn to him. I also saw some of his goals and... wow! More embarrassingly though, I also liked playing as Newcastle on FIFA games but that wasn't the real reason. I also feel like it was fate. No-one in my family remotely follows football and when I was rummaging through blank tapes to my surprise was a copy of a certain 5-0 win over Man Utd. Turns out my dad works with a guy from Newcastle who wanted that game taped when it was on... and he gave it back. Imagine my surprise when I found it 2 years ago. A 10-year old tape (at the time) of a game that no-one in my family was interested in magically wasn't taped over and was just sitting in my house. Un-freaking-believable. Edited just to clarify: I'm an Aussie.
