It's probably bollocks but if we had the chance to swap Darren Bent for Martins late in the Jan 09 transfer window (mentioned on transfer deadline day, I think), then we were mad not to do it. I said I'd prefer Bent to Martins then, and plenty of people disagreed with me. I would now kill to have someone of Darren Bent's quality or better going into our final 4 games.

B*ll*cks from Shearer, tbh - we could've played 4 at the back with any out of Edgar, Raylor or Bassong at LB, and though the left-back position wouldn't have been ideal, the back four would've overall been much better than the back 3 + wing backs that we started with today.

Said in the Pre-Match thread that if we went 3-5-2 today (rather than going 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 with someone playing out of position at LB) then we'd pay the price for it, and I'm very sorry to have been proved right. Wor Shearer, love you as a player, and as a manager you bring the enthusiasm and will-to-win that we need, but your formations and team selections are sadly no better than the idiots who preceded you.

For me, you go 4 at the back anyway. Playing a centre half or right-back out of position in the left-back position is the lesser of two evils when compared to playing a 3 man defence for me. Even if all 3 defenders are centre-backs, it's not the same playing as a central defender in a back 4 compared to a back 3, and I think the net effect of a back 3 is to put MORE of our defenders in unfamiliar/uncomfortable positions.

I think a 3-5-2 formation is madness. Very disappointed with that, if that's how those 11 players do line up, and if so then can't see anything other than a heavy defeat for us on the cards.

Fair point, but with (as Mojo says) Jenas and Palacios undoubtedly eating up Nolan and Butt for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then we'll have to worry about Modric and especially Lennon running around our defence like blue-arsed flies. Not a nice thought.

We very much could have done without Palacios returning for suspension for them for Sunday, he gives them some proper bite in midfield.
