racist abuse I know that, but how bad, how much etc? I've read a few things here and there, but nowt really reveals the true extent. Watching the documentary on the Chelsea player, fucking hell man, what a vile society/game at the time. I wish Pat Nevin had revealed the player who was racist to Paul Canoville. Btw Pat Nevin seems a top bloke like! I think it was bad, and a lot. certainly every game that involved a black player. Monkey noises, people hoying bananas, every known verbal racist insult, racist 'songs' I thought all this was normal.National front handing out shite outside the ground. I can barely remember Howard Gayle 8 games on loan in 83, tho i never missed a game that season. I remember Tony Cunningham, and a certain name directed at him, but I think his race didnt really come into the fact the fans just thought he was shit and symptomatic of the poor first season back in the top flight playing hoofball under Jack Charlton. The Newcastle crowd were just generally racist in the early/ mid 80s, names, monkey noises, bananas and songs, chants were quite common iirc. Im sure someone will be along to disagree- but thats how I remember it. Casual racism was pretty much an accepted norm in the area where I grew up tbh.
