Nail your colours to the mast before 1730 (13/08/11): Where will we finish?

last season 49 points got you 8th, and 46 points got you 14th. would performance (in a thread like this) not be better gauged by points, given thepotential movement in the table just one more win COULD have won a team last season? i mean, people thinking we may do better than last year may be right in that we get one more win and another draw or two, but this season it may take more than the 46 points we got last year to reach 12th, or it may take less. would finishing tenth on 45 points be better than last season? what about finishing 13th on 47 points? -
If his penalties are anything to go by he should be taking all of our set pieces! if his corners are anything to go by, he'd hit the first defender with every penalty Was talking about Shola. ah. ok.
-
is that watertight though? the ref can call the yellow for dissent, then claim not to have seen him grab gervinho, maybe, and agree a ban on appeal? he wont exactly get sympathetic treatment, given his history with the fa, or his own behaviour towards the officials today on the pitch

# not sure about hate, but you're right. its all about joey, and not in a good way. anyone notice how good his corners were when cabaye went off, by the way?

nailed on to get a ban from teh fa, on monday. after the stamp, he went right up to the fourth official waving his finger in the guys face. he had a point (!) of course, but that wont help the situation when the ref is asked to judge the sending off of gervinho, and bartons role in it

if liverpool just had colo, jonas, barton and tiote, they could take this lot, easily.... ...is what we hope kenny isnt thinking about now
-
so, they bought a whole new team, but only started two of them? what a window, eh?

50 points, should get us 8th/9th -
kk had better options at that point than any of the others. he had owen viduka and martins all involved, didnt he? wonder whether he'd have peddled him in say, hughtons shoes 24 months ago?

is it anything to do with the expectations of a 'buying' club? he's available for free, but what would joey be owed by nufc, in terms of wages and bonuses, if his contract was to be cancelled to allow him to move? maybe 3.5/4m? maybe its less, i dont know, but that money has to either be paid by the club to barton, paid in part or in full by they 'buying' club, or written off in part or in full by joey himself. if we were acting like it was impossible to see joey staying beyond august, the buying club would not join negotiations to get the problem of this payment out of the way. i'd imagine newcastle would at least want half of this paid by (everton? stoke? whoever) if he was to leave. remember the payment man city owed joey, it was much less and he waited for it before he moved

Now, it happened 2 minutes ago. He might just have hurt his leg ffs crisis? listen to jimburst. he's keeping it together. its going to be ok, isnt it jim? -
a lot of the posts above are tagging larsson to newcastle almost as a given, but i saw in a couple of articles at the weekend that sunderland are being linked very strongly with him just now. anyone care too much if he goes there instead? either way, if the papers concerned are given any weight at all, it doesnt look like a forgone conclusion at this stage

1986 (pretty sure of that, september), home against wimbledon. we won one nowt with gazza scoring an amazing goal from outside the box to the far top corner. (surely the kind of thing ranger will do, any week now...)

pretty sure we were linked to williamson the same window as when he moved to watford, though we are of course linked to lots of players every window. maybe it was just paper talk. Nowt on .com's rumour pages from Nov/Dec 08 or Jan 09 about him like. Edit: Wullie wrong window, my memory failed me. check august 09 on the same site, which was of course much closer to hughton being appointed as fulltime manager

But didn't they admit in the tribunal that the 'manager has the final say in transfers' was wrong? isnt it also true that we first tried to sign mike williamson in january 09, long before hughton became manager? suggests at the very least that more than one person is responsible for identifying targets. and given how long the average manager lasts, that has to be a good thing.

didnt souness accuse shepherd of signing players he chose, rather than the players souness wanted himself? remember, we were linked with boumsong before souness arrived, and we signed him after souness became boss. graeme souness also told the story himself on tv that he lined up anelka and boa morte for a combined 11m, only to be told by fat fred that owen and luque were coming instead. this isnt altogether in defence of souness, but the guy was sacked a few months later because the team were shite. his answer to being sacked was that he didnt get the players he wanted. anyone take anelka over owen, in hindsight?
