FBref isn't the be all and end all of stats by any means but it gives a good overview of a player's strengths and weaknesses. Botman and Kelly are a little less meaningful because of the fact they've played alot less minutes than the others, so they aren't that accurate particularly. What this does show is that actually Dan Burn would be the best partner for Guehi at this moment in time until Botman is fit. Guehi and Schar would be somewhat lacking in alot of areas defensively, although immense at ball progression and retention.

I'd argue it's more to do with the drop off in quality in those particular positions and what that then means for the teams as a whole rather than the current quality of player in that position. Whilst Lascelles is injured, the next CB in line if Schar is out for any length of time is Krafth (who isn't actually a CB let's be honest here) and there is a HUGE drop in quality if that happens Whereas if Miggy is injured then Murphy comes in or even Barnes/Gordon swaps and there is no drop off in quality or output (arguably more output if Barnes or Gordon plays at RW instead). It's why we were so desperate for Tosin at the start of window, that would've sorted the defence for this season and meant money could be spent elsewhere (RW, maybe even GK).

I also seem to remember at the time the fee we paid for him seemed on the high side. Don't think anyone thinks that now though.
-
Feels like this is all about Palace publicly making everyone aware of the situation to try and flush out another bidder. Far more confident about these situations now Mitchell is in control of them, I think this will happen even if it's not until this time next week.
-
How does he fair on clay? Can be a tricky transition for some.
-
It does feel a little like our RW search has shifted within the last week from looking at £50M-£60M players to £20M-£30M players. Which I suppose would make sense if we're now considering Guehi over Thiaw. Got to get that extra millions from somewhere if no sales are being made.
-
I believe it was "in excess of £60M" Could be £65M, could easily £70M with add ons.
-
That's very unlike Edwards. Although close in his mind could be two weeks away. Id take that though.
-
I reckon it's gotten to the point in pre season now where even if we sign a new RW in the next week then it will be Murphy or Miggy starting the season at RW regardless. Same goes for whatever CB we sign now.
-
Would make sense. It's unfortunate but I think we would struggle with wages and squad spaces if Miggy stays AND we bring a RW in. Especially as Wilson is clearly not going anywhere. Trippier/Lewis/Targett leaving would certainly help though.
-
I think the price tag is fair enough. If we end up paying something between £60M-£70M for a proven 24yr old CB who could realistically be first choice for the next 6+years then I'm all for that. Also considering his age there's no reason you can't give him the longest contract possible to spread that money.
-
Especially if that's how we go about keeping Isak.

Hall the bright spark once again.
-
Murphy had so many opportunities to get that to another player rather than try that there. Really poor this second half. Krafth especially.
-
Perhaps. But I'm not talking about fitness. I mean misplaced passes and losing his man.
-
Not sure if it's just me but Tino has looked a little off it, not just in this first 10 minutes of this game but generally overall in pre season so far.
-
Longstaff should have scored. Good save potentially.
-
Burn at LB it is then. Poor Lewis Hall.
-
Assuming this was sarcasm? But just in case not. Botman isn't fit and who knows when he will be 100% fit and ready to play. Burn will be 33 by end of the season, his playing time is going to be far more limited this season anyway and definitely if Thiaw or Guehi come in.

Chelsea don't need anymore CBs. Arsenal don't need anymore CBs. Man City don't need anymore CBs. Man United might do depending how serious that injury to their new kid is but cant see them spending again in that position. Liverpool maybe, but Guehi wouldn't get in ahead of Van Dijk and Konate so he'd be foolish to go there. Spurs maybe, but again they have two CBs in Van De Ven and Romero who will expect to be first choice and then Dragusin as back up. Villa would the one who could do with a CB if Diego Carlos leaves as it seems he may well do and I'd not be shocked if they were to go in for Guehi if they have the funds to do so. You'd imagine that puts us, right now, in pole position for him but things change quick and all it takes is Van Dijk, Maguire or one of the City CBs to get a big move to Saudi and then he'd be offered UCL football and a bigger wage no doubt. That would make it much harder.

Even if I he hadnt just been (arguably) Englands best plyer at the Euros I would've been extremely pleased with this. Very promising that it's Ornstein coming with this news. I'd take Guehi over Thiaw for sure.

Dubravka in the squad

It's not about him managing 38 games a season. It's about him being at 100% in every single game he plays in. Previous seasons he's had to play regardless because Wilson has been unavailable. I'd much prefer to see Isak play 30 games at 100% rather than see him play 38 games where a handful of those he's struggling through a knock or has an illness. I get that players play with minor injuries all the time but they shouldn't HAVE to if the guy you've got to replace them is capable and importantly, fit and ready to play.
