I don’t find Southgate dislikable, personally. Seems like a canny gadgie. True, but that depends on what the club is ‘trying’ to do. I’d suggest that the implication is that the club would be trying to win things, while not demanding that it does. Either way, it is meaningless in the context of the performance of the players.

I never liked that mantra, and it doesn’t speak for all of us. Mainly because it is utter bollocks - a team of triers losing every week would not be a popular one on Tyneside.

You’re right of course re the lineup vs Sheff Wed - it was just a really poor performance. I can just about forgive it if we’re on a LC run tbf. But it is just so depressing to see the oldest football competition in the world - and one which for most of its lifetime was far more prestigious than the league title - being undermined because of the money. Desperately sad.
