  1. Just speculating but as an Aussie, (and Central Coast Mariners fan) after the world cup Kuol was the most exciting thing in Australian football, it felt. I was thrilled he signed with Newcastle. And NUFC got a lot of positive coverage in Australia (where in all honesty) they are not one of the most supported EPL teams. I'm not suggesting his transfer and fee was a cynical attempt to get more supporters for NUFC from this part of the world cos as others have pointed out football is not the biggest sport here so don't know how big the market is etc - but coming from a smaller football nation, I know a lot of supporters did take an interest in NUFC (just to see how a 'local boy' is going).
  2. New member here, but as follower of rugby league in Australia and 'turf toe' is an injury that is not uncommon in league. Seems innocuous but puts players out for months. I remember losing one player for most a 26 week season to 'turf toe'. That's why I was so worried about Barnes. Hope I'm wrong and he's back soon
  3. Perhaps if they do it through official channels they can't hide it from family, club etc...
  4. I had to do some work in sexual assault and the law, for a project I was writing on. I'm not an expert, so take this all with a grain of salt. And I speak from an Australian perspective, but our law is based on British Law. But false accusations of sexual assault are statistically very very low. Conviction rates for sexual assault are also very low, which acts to deter 'false' and true victims coming forward to police. The standard of proof necessary for a conviction that can result in gaol time is very high, as little as between 8-12%. Police treatment of sexual assault victims has also been heavily criticised. What is most interesting is recent studies that show how trauma affects memory and can actually lead to gaps and mistakes in memory - and due to the adversarial nature of legal cases which depends on defence barristers demolishing the credibility of witnesses (often the complainant) these 'gaps' and 'erasures' are exactly the sort of thing that defence uses. I don't know the truth of this, and I doubt anyone can. But victims returning to abusing partner is sadly not uncommon - in fact a victim 'goes back' to an abuser three times (on average) before leaving them, so we can't draw anything conclusive in this. But agree with Groundhog, the club probably has grounds for dismissal on 'professional conduct' grounds if nothing else. Apologies for long post - if anyone is interested there is a great book called 'Witness' by Louise Milligan that goes into depth about sexual assault and the law.
  5. Actually first year following the team. Started watching Premier League with my son and I had to pick a team. My mum's a Geordie from Blaydon so the choice was easy. Getting the feeling it was a pretty good year to start following the team!
  6. Yeah I grew up there. Got to play on that pitch a couple of times as a school kid. It's beautiful in the sunshine there.

  8. There'll be plenty more when Kuol comes over. My mum was born in Newcastle, although it didn't stop me calling it Newcarssle.
  9. Ha. I grew up on the Cennie Coast. Kuol looks like a star
  10. He's great. Watched him last year. Good get if true.
  11. Woke up early in Sydney to watch game, caught last thirty minutes. Proud of the team but the hell with 98 minutes? At least the sun is shining's here after a lot of rain. Make of that crap metaphor what you will!
