Sums the match up pretty perfectly for me. The only real thing I’d add is the affect of conceding so soon into the second half, it really changed the mood of the two teams and gave the Marseille fans reason to go wild. Add a quality, if ageing, striker who can still finish like Aubameyang in contrast to having to playing Gordon in that position. Having said that….Pope. Fuck me. Did the praise he got from pundits for putting Harland off at the weekend go to his head?

He’s been a massive miss. Him and Tino provide so much movement and fluidity to the team. Without them we’ve looked slow witted down the wings.

Our movement off the ball is atrocious these days.

I’ll back Howe through thick and thin, but this was avoidable.

Wish our lot would offer Woltemade more of an outlet. Every game now he gets two players marking him with each pass into him. Holds it up well but eventually gets dispossessed as our players hold off.

Christ man, it’s that right there that makes a middle aged old git a bit wobbly and brings tears to the eyes.

Thought that was a cracking demonstration of what the lad can do. Held off the (what was it, two?) defenders with his back to goal on the edge of the box. Controlled the ball and flicked it up to himself to pass it on a half turn perfectly to Gordon. I just love having a player with the close control he has. Always got grumpy when seeing the ball just bounce off one of our players …. like I’ve ever had the skill set to do any better! I think he’ll score plenty but provide so much more for the wingers and midfield running in. Problem we’ve got is our two best WBs are out plus the ‘out and out’ striker and everyone else is trying to adapt to a very different approach. I’m curious and excited to see what Eddie’s plans might be once they’re back. I’m also all-in on the thought/hope/belief that this signing and the changes it brings will deliver more goals from across the pitch than relying on one excellent striker/snake.

For centre backs so much depends on your partner and the understanding you can strike together. Never forget how Bramble looked so improved alongside Woodgate….mostly With Botman he’s got class to ease him in. Pretty happy with what I’ve seen so far but I didn’t see anything of him at Milan so he’s got a clean slate with me.
